Rumor is that Toyota is working on a replacement to the FJ Cruiser that is more of a modern-day FJ40. It would even have a straight front axle. Evidently there is a goal of competing more directly with the Jeep Wranglers.

IMHO it is just a cyclical design thing, like they say "if you hold onto your clothes long enough they will come back in style"

Perhaps in ten years we will see a return to clean rounded cars?

Car designers are also big copy cats, someone comes out with a new/different style that sells and the rest are all over it.
