Leave vehicles unlocked in garage. But...you have to either have the remote or garage to house deadbolt code to get at them. Overhead door has a deadbolt that operates off the door opener, foregoes that push the top of the overhead open and fish the opener release thing.

I too have had the window smashed out of my unlocked car. The door checkers have a pretty good system now that prevents that.
I don't leave anything in the outside car at all.

Step one, the cars live in the garage. But I’ve never left them unlocked, or with anything valuable sitting out, ever. The only exception is driving a Jeep with no doors, in which case I just don’t leave anything worth stealing.

That being said, I DO have a security system. It's called a very life like rubber SNAKE. He lives in the drivers side floorboard with his head perched near the rocker panel. You open the door and he is ready to strike. Sometimes when I don't drive the car for a long time he even makes me jump.

Locking the garage before going to bed is part of my nightly routine. When we go away in addition to disabling the remotes I throw the dead bolts built into the tracks. I also have a security camera inside the garage. I figure if they defeat the one outside they won’t be expecting the one hidden on the shelf against the back wall till they see the bright red lights for night vision and then it’s too late.

Non locker here. Nothing in the car that I would not give you. Never leave the keys in them. Couple months ago I accidentally left the keys in the Porsche. Killed the battery big time. Hope I do not do that again.

When outside, I always lock them.
When inside, I never lock them. Only got robbed one time, when I left the car unlocked. They took a cheap cassette player from under the dash. It did piss me off though. |

In the locked garage, my 911 is locked and no keys for it in the garage or in the house except in a safe, or in my pocket.
The El Camino stays in the garage unlocked. The garage is full of my tools and equipment so they would be stolen long before the car or the stuff in it.

At home or my condos, no. At a shopping center or out somewhere, yes. Sometimes, I don't even lock my house. SWAT officer in front of my house, Secret Service special agent in the back.

Growing up in VT we never locked our cars at home or our house for that matter. After moving to NYC it became a compulsive habit which continues even in super safe Japan. I also think it keeps the electronics from draining the battery.

i leave it unlocked and I DONT leave anything of value in it.
if I doi do lock it though, but not at home, its in the garage. I had a small bag with a change of clothes in my truck one time. I locked it,. they broke the window and I don't even think they stole the bag. replacing the window and cleaning it up was worse than losing the bag. I would rather they go thru my car than to break glass. when I had my 914 I had about $50 in the center console and for some dumb reason I locked the glove box. they broke into it, tore up the glove box, never got in, they did not look under the center cushion and missed the 5-. to make things worse there was NOTHING in the glove box.

We used to be able to not lock anything here where I live in Florida. I never locked the car and we would forget to lock the house often with no consequence. Sometimes I would forget to close the garage door at night and it would stay open all night.
Now we make sure the place is locked down tight as well as the cars in the driveway. I never locked them either. We never had a problem, there were reports of robberies and car break ins in our community so we were proactive about it. When we had our place in North Carolina a member that used to be on here (Procon) used to live in the same town, he was part of the reason I purchased where I did. He made fun of me for locking my house, told me it was totally not needed. Hell, he never took the keys out of the ignition of his car in front of the house or when he went to stores. It was that nice there, I miss that place.

When I use a commuter car or truck, I lock it. When I drive one of my nice cars I never lock it, I also do not leave valuables in sight or take them into the hotel etc.

Never lock them, and also leave the keys under the seat. I own too many cars.
Vermont is pretty safe.

I only lock my vehicles if going into a store, or at a campground. At home, or at work, I leave unlocked, but also don't leave valuables in sight. The MidWest farm country is truly a different world than either coast, or big cities...relaxed pace, hardly any crime, and long term neigbors who care.
