Thanks Troy... long time...
Well I haven't had much time OR $ lately but I'm starting to look at engine parts again and planning to get back to work on the interior this winter. In case you missed it, I got divorced... again! Lol, and just moved for the second time in a year so getting settled at our new house and setting up the garage so I can get going again. I've settled on a 3.2SS motor but keep going back and forth on EFI or carbs, single plug or twin, limited slip diff or open, blah blah... I kinda want simple so we'll see what happens. The car won't weight more than 2400lbs. so it'll be a ripper either way. I still have yet to drive a 911 save for that one SC I took for a lil' joyride while working at the Porsche dealer when I was eighteen! I graciously accept rides when the opportunity presents itself though! ;) |
Yeah, I read back through the posts a bit, triangulated the info and figured that's what happened. So sorry, dude. I'm sure there's a helluva story there and maybe I'll get to hear it over beers sometime.
Anyway, the car is looking awesome. It has come so, so far. And of course the engine choices abound. Not that you asked, but if you're set on something like a short stroke, and given the "spirit" of the car, personally I'd stick with carbs. EFI without VVT just limits your cam choices a lot (little/no overlap for the rev zone). Also, they are really spendy but twin plugs are pretty much a must-have IMO if you're using 98mm slugs/jugs AND raising the compression over 9. 9:1 or less compression and you might get away with it. Lack of knock sensor means you really need more uniform ignition with bores over 95mm (stock) as poor quality gas and detonation insurance. I assume you're starting with a 3.0 case and crank. And maybe/probably I'm not saying anything you don't already know here. ;-} Also, I think you drove my car once right after I got it so that's technically not true. But that was... wait for it... 10 years ago! Good God how time flies. |
Ha ha, no need to be sorry... I'm sure not! :D
Okay, enough of that! I'm already holding: case, cams (DC 24 w/108 lc), rods, crank, towers, rockers, heads (large port), oil pump... I'm on the lookout for some Alusil jugs with intentions on having them drilled and plated. There's a few other doo-dads I need and then of course reconditioning all of it which as you know is where the expense is. I kinda think you're right about going with carbs. I'll prolly end up saving up for some PMO's in the end. I wish they were a little more budget friendly tho. EDIT: Just for the record... You did offer to let me drive your car but I graciously declined however, I do remember the ride! :) |
Ha. OK. 'Nuff said.
Want to hear something funny? I still have my stock Alusil jugs and slugs. If you want to make a deal let me know and I'll PM some pics. The jugs look nice, no gouges and clean sealing surfaces, all 6 made stock compression. Would be good candidates to recondition/replate. They have been sitting around for years now wrapped in a cozy blanket of oil waiting for a warmer day, so no hurry... |

Well I'm working on the interior now... applying some sound deadening to the floor pan and such in preparation for a "plush" RS carpet kit from APPBIZ. Not sure why it's called that. It's more like a thicker Perlon really. Anyway, I'll apply some foam over the damplifier to smooth things out a bit more. I'll try to post some photos soon... I'm wanting EVERYTHING done (a true roller) before I start on the drive-train... (deep breath) ...sigh... which as everyone knows is not easy on the pocketbook! Just adding up the cost is very daunting! I was told by the PO the 915 was "good-to-go" so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It has obviously been apart before (silicon sealant is visible around the partings) however there are no numbers to identify it's, well, anything! I'm thinking it may have been replaced with a new unit and/or case at one time or another??? The car was previously used as a DE car so might possibly have some different gearing. I'll likely be digging into it early next year to inspect and (cringe) hopefully just re-seal. It has an open diff so I'm looking at the possibility of installing a Quafe LSD. |
Here we go again...
As promised! Okay so I've been working on the interior some. First I installed some Damplifier Pro in preparation for an RS carpet kit. I cut it to fit into the recessed areas of the floor-pan, sides and rear shelf. A bit hard to see in the photos since everything is black but hopefully you get the idea. All told, I used 9lbs. of it! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578542.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578568.jpg I put in some Rennline goodies too! Unfortunately my order got a tad bungled so I'm missing a strut brace, gas pedal and blower cover. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578750.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578794.jpg I finally have a real PORSCHE key too! Too bad the battery will likely be dead by the time this thing hits the pavement! :( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578868.jpg Some other goodies too :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578972.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578997.jpg So here's where I'm at currently with the carpet project. I used some 1/2" closed cell foam the smooth things out a bit. What a friggin biatch it is to work the carpet! I got my work cut out for me for sure. I weighed the carpet, foam and damplifier... all told I'll be putting in 20lbs.!!! That's less than that tar crap the factory used on the floor alone! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413579276.jpg |
So here's where I'm at...
Interior is completely finished now! RS carpet is in and done. I even got the rear-view mirror mounted! I have yet to install exterior lighting (bulbs) but they're on the way. I ordered a third brake light from Daniel Stern which is an LED unit but decided to go with regular bulbs for all other exterior lights with the exception of the headlights which will be LED! Overall, I'm happy with how things turned out. Here's the proof... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415029730.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415029781.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415029814.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415029862.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415029904.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415029965.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415030004.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1415030044.jpg Next up are headlight relays and fuel lines (going with -AN) then onto the drivetrain!!! |
I'm half considering a Momo Prototipo wheel or the "Retro"... any thoughts?
|
Looks really, really nice and uber clean. Great balance between modern and retro.
|
Hey 78SCRMAN, this is a great build and thread. You're a man after my own heart. ;)
I'd love to read your feedback about the sound deadening results. I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my '78 (after losing the stock bumpers and weight, of course). :) Great work my man! Looking forward to updates. Cheers |
Oh, and I love my ProtoTypo, but I do recommend adding the MOMO 1/2" spacer to bring the wheel a little closer. I love mine.
|
Craig D,
Unfortunately, I won't be able to give feedback on the sound deadening since I have nothing to compare to but when it's all said and done I'll certainly have an opinion. I ended up selling the "pd" wheel in favor of the "Retro" which I'm very pleased with. I think it goes well with the interior and the flavor of the car. You be the judge... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1419813921.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1419813941.jpg I also purchased an Porsche logo, embossed horn button to complete the look! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1419814013.jpg |
Just keeps getting better and better!!! Love the progress made!!
|
the car is looking great your doing one hell of a good job !
|
Thanks alot everyone! I keep wondering if anyone is still watching since I'm plodding along so slow.
At this point, I'm super close to starting in on the drive train! All I really have left is fueling. I'm awaiting an order of -an fittings and hose to get me started on that. I also have my heads (early SC, AKA, large port) at the machine shop getting the air injection holes and intake (fuel injector cut-outs) welded up. (going with carbs) I'll be porting them a bit this winter. Polishing the combustion chambers and exhaust ports and cleaning up the intake ports, so not really porting but more of a cleanup of sorts. |
-an fitting goodness...
Although I'm only done with the front end, I figured I'd post some photos for your viewing pleasure. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. Tunnel lines, for those that missed it, are simply 3/8 brake line tubing with -an hardline adapters at both ends. They are a compression type fitting very similar to what you'd find in residential plumping. Not a lot of space to work with under there but I got er' done! :D Too bad all that purdy stuff is hidden! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422554707.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422554727.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422554745.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422554768.jpg Next I'll be doing the engine compartment (which I'm working on already) so stay tuned... |

Thanks Wachuko!
Okay so not a big deal to you all but is somewhat of a milestone for the build. You see, I've been putting off bleeding the brakes because I made all my own hard lines and have been terrified they'd all leak. Well not all leaked but while in-situate, I had a leak! Damnit! A fairly bad one too!!! Grrr... So had to remove the skid plate covering the fuel pump to get to it and all it was... I had neglected to fully tighten the two lines connecting the elbow... really? Oh well, no damage (except to my ego) occurred, whew! Anyway, the whole reason was to test all of the lighting (especially the brake lights) and fuel pump operation including my hidden theft deterrent fuel cut switch. ;) EVERYTHING works as intended! These photos don't do the lighting justice but the result is fabulous! The high mount brake light is absolutely superb. (A Daniel Stern product... er, from his catalog anyway) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422821121.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422821139.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422821154.jpg |
Amazing build !!!
All this lights like a dream comes true... :-) also, I have a question were did you buy gas tank with feeler like that? Thank you. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413578750.jpg |
The tank with a fuel filler in that location? You build it...meaning, you modify the stock unit to your liking... ...just like we modified the one I had with the center fill.

[QUOTE=1-ev.com;8473009]Amazing build !!!
All this lights like a dream comes true... :-) also, I have a question were did you buy gas tank with feeler like that? Thank you./QUOTE] Wachuko is correct. I cut the original one off and patched that hole with steel sheet and used a hole saw to cut the hole you see in the photo. Then welded in the filler that came from the drivers fender and Viola'! As for the tank itself, I used a wire wheel mounted on an electric angle grinder to remove all of the original undercoating. Then sprayed a coat of epoxy primer to protect the bare metal and finished with Würth undercoating (black). I plan to ditch the spare and use a 16x6 fuchs wheel with an appropriate size collapsible spare. Low on the priority list at the moment tho. I'm getting a start on the drive-train now... wait until I show all the boolshiat I'm having to do to get that all to work right. I've got a bunch of parts (been buying stuff from Fleebay and here and there) that are from 1970's on up to the 1990's so there's a few things that don't quite work together. Mostly though, it's a 3.0 SC engine. I decided to buy parts instead of a complete motor back in 2009 since prices were way down, ended up serving me well. For example: I picked up a set of big port SC heads for $300! |

But obviously it is possible and can be done safely. Can you share the techniques you used? I am considering grinding off the lip of my gas tank, cleaning it up, coating it with something durable, likely getting rid of the plastic swirl pot and then stitching it up again..... Thanks Dennis |
Dennis,
I'd tend to agree with your dad but in my case the tank had been out of the car and drained for some 6+ years so there was no fuel whatsoever left inside so there was no concern. That being said, I have/had an uncle that died due to welding near a tank that was not drained and the worst happened! May he rest in peace! Use common sense and you'll be fine. :) |
This is an absolutely incredible build. Amazing! Thanks for taking all the extra time to post and discuss in addition to all the time spent doing this work.
|
^^^ Thanks Mr.! SmileWavy
I got my heads back from the machine shop where he welded up the air injection ports and also the fuel injector divots. So this is how I spent my morning... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424898070.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424898094.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424898127.jpg ...a bit more polishing on the one but you get the idea. Sigh... then five more to go. :roll eyes: My goal with this is simply to smooth things out. Bumps, casting marks, etc. I did do a little boat tailing behind the intake valve as you can see and had to cut the exhaust valve guide flush in order to get the port polished but they will all be replaced anyway. I will also go back and scuff up the intake port with some 80 grit for better turbulence. |
Wait! What!? Engine work too!!?? Oh man! I am so far behind!!!! :)
Looking great man! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pray.gif |
Inspirational build. Just read the whole thing. You have a new follower.
I would love to see some of the details and the techniques you used to do your head polishing work. |

I don't really expect to gain anything by doing it since I'm not doing much more than smoothing out the casting marks but I (usually) have the time so figured I'd go ahead and have some fun with it. ;) |
Sigh... :)
I'm throwing around the idea of selling this car. I'm interested in what it might be worth in it's current state which is: complete rolling car needing only an engine and trans. Any input RE: pricing would be appreciated. |
My advice? Don't sell, hang in there!!! If you were closer, I'd donate some time to help finish the project. Perhaps some other Pelicans in your area feel the same.
|
You may want to just step back and take a break.
Then go to Rennsport Reunion for some motivation.:D I know in my case sometimes my car can sit for a while. Then I get re-motivated. Here is the dilemma. For what you could sell your car for what would you buy that could possibly replace it? You are creating a real work of art. I bet if you sold it you would forever regret it. The bottom line is, if you sold it now, you would only get pennies on the dollar for your investment. |
Thanks guys, really!
It's not a matter of motivation or time it's the ol' cashflow dilemma! I suppose I can sit on it for a couple more or even three more years. It costs me nothing to do that. I don't need the money either but I do need money to finish it. THAT's the dilemma! ;) |

Not here often, stumble upon the question of welding gas tanks...
I've done it many times, I learned how from my dad who taught me to weld when I was a kid. Drain the tank, rinse out & fill with water. The water displaces the air that holds fumes. No fumes, no boom. ;) |
Don't sell your car. You will regret not finishing the project.
|
Don't sell it !!!!!!!!!!!!
You have put way too much work into it to quit at the 5 yard line. You will never regret finishing it. But I guarantee you will regret selling it. |
