Newbie question about block sanding
I understand how to do block sanding using a guide coat, but was wondering if I always need to do it on a large panel? For example, I just stripped all the paint off of my hood, which was perfect & had no repairs to it. I coated the bare metal with 2 coats of epoxy primer & it looks great. So do I need to block sand this or am I ready for paint?

The primer that was sprayed on will have the "orange peel" texture. Definitely need to spray the guide coat and use a long rectangular sanding block and go thru the whole panel in a crisscross pattern. The sealer and color coat needs no sanding. The clear coat, again is the majority of blocking.

becouse the mill build is so thin with e-coat (epoxy or etching ) primers . you will sand right thru the primer . at most you should only spray 2 to 3 medium coats of an e-primer giving you NO more than 1.5 to 2.0 mills of coverage . when it comes to e-primers more is never better . in my shop we will give the panel 1 to 2 light coats of an e-prime just to get coverage . then going wet on wet right over the top with a build primer giving us a good substraight for blocking . if your using a proper set up an e-primer should not have much if any peal to it . quight often we will go from a coat of epoxy primer to sealer to top coats .wet on wet on wet . this work very well for the panels that need no body work .

follow 962porsche's advice above. although it might look straight now, afer you lay down a few coats of primer filler and guide coat and block it, you will be surprised at all the high or low spots ......
