As I mentioned... this is a project that I bought from someone else... meaning, a shell and lots and lots of boxes. The RS carpet, turns out it was missing a section. The one that covers the rear shelve.. What I still had was the original cover. Got some more leather today, recovered the top (had to cut a panel to cover the old one as the holes for the speaker were an issue...) With the top section recovered in leather, used the stock/black front section and voila! It is dark and I was sweating like a pig... Everything needs to be cleaned up... between the dust and the cutting of carpet... it needs a good interior cleaning... I will do that tomorrow and take better photos...
I still need to install the 4 bolts that hold those pieces in the back... forgot to install those... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psh86dimta.jpg I then went on to work on recovering, in leather, the side molding... one side done! http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psedsqpsad.jpg Wine is calling, Good night! Edit: A better photo... all secured, both sides installed, and panels cleaned... just need to vac the carpet. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5uk7uezo.jpg |
7.00 metal frame + PORSCHE caliper label and we have ourselves a tag frame!. Used some double-sided tape to put it in place before I drill the mounting holes for the frame that is underneath. I like how it looks. I will replace the acorn nuts for regular ones so that I can install the black covers for the bolt area...
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps3qtojdqf.jpg For the tag lights, not decided on what to use. With the car the PO had two new chromed lights.... but I am thinking on using two small LEDs bolt/screw that have light on them. This would provide a very clean install... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...TagLight-1.jpg Oh, and a Happy New Year to all!!! |
Moved the cars around to be able to work more comfortable with the suspension and brakes...
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psyb482exl.jpg Installed the Rennline engine crossbar as well... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbevdzyu9.jpg The RSR 3.0 tag was from the RSR project... with that gone, I had it laying around... not the right tag for this car but just using it for the photos. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psxgndv1bx.jpg Still cleaning and organizing the garage, again!. To make room to be able to work on the car while on the lift... it helps that a few 911 SC boxes got emptied and 912 parts can go in their place :) And putting trash where it belongs... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pssuxrbak6.jpg |
Started to install the rotors, calipers, etc. and forgot to read the fine print...
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psyoehzq76.jpg I first have to remove the tab to allow for the needed clearance... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psy9juyou1.jpg |
Modification done and both calipers installed. It is time for one or four margaritas!!!!
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psq28ke82s.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psrtdwja3k.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pst0y7h8m6.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psakhwifxj.jpg Rinse and repeat... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psgyy3bm75.jpg And next (another day since the margaritas are calling my name...) to work on replacing these parts... Driver side is gone, passenger side is in good condition. Car will be street driven only...and I have spare stock parts...not sure it merits some fancy parts there from Elephant Racing... ...must decide what to go with... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psddy2xgt9.jpg |
Well, so much for margaritas... We did not go out for any :(
So I spent time taking apart the front rotor and inspecting the condition of surrounding components. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pst4daki8r.jpg Car came with a new set of Turbo tie rods, perfect as the ones in the car are in need of replacement: http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psi0ujso8y.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psyejgdfy1.jpg All out, tested the mount and caliper. Since the front set of calipers are used, need to paint them and install the new PORSCHE labels that I got for them. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps2rm3fs7q.jpg Could not resist to spray some orange paint on the strut :) http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pspbsfipkt.jpg I need new bushings all around, remove and clean, powder coat, etc. Torsion bar needs to be redone...black or orange, anything but the current yellow that it has... Also need to remove the spacer and O-ring from the spindle using a two jaw puller.... |

Making an inventory of fuel lines to replace... basically anything with a rubber hose attached to it. For the RSR we took a few to a local place that replaced the rubber pieces from the hard lines (with the special crimping tool required for it... something that I can't do at home)... because at the time we could not find them for purchase... Seems that all these, except for one, are now available from Pelican/Porsche:
911-356-087-00 911-356-089-01 930-356-068-02 930-356-081-04 930-356-062-01 Return Line 930-110-301-05 930-110-304-03 930-110-495-00 930-110-498-00 930-110-491-00 -> This is the one that is no longer available... So far that is about US$828.74 in fuel lines... this is a painful expense that provides peace of mind... last thing that I need is for the car to catch on fire because I wanted to save a few bucks on replacing 34 years old fuel lines... |
This came in last night... for US$22.00 I figured that I would take the chance with it. It is from a 1996 911/993 but it looks like it would work. So unless there are any clearance issues with that metal piece on the upper left, I am hoping that it works... I will just need to drill out the ball since mine just has a hole in there to insert the rod instead of a ball socket... Cautiously optimistic that it is going to work :)
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psvxaxyrha.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pscnty0ffl.jpg |
Finished the second caliper... both now painted and with the script/label
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psywfccnof.jpg Modified the shield so that it would work with the new calipers. Yes, still need to get that powder coated (or painted) black  http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psnehxzewg.jpg I also got the tool to remove and install the grooved nut for the ball joint . Only 20.00 from Amazon! - OEM 25965 1/2-Inch 66.5 by 80mm Front Wheel Bearing Locknut Socket http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pslwp1zkyv.jpg |

Another day, another order from the bird...

Got the key blank cut... not easy to find a locksmith that would cut my blank... most of them do not want to do blanks brought in by customers... anyway, glad to have a decent key now...
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7tah0dmd.jpg I hate it when people do not use the correct tool... ruined nut, reason why I ordered a new one. The tool that I got worked great with an impact wrench... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psrqh9xjhd.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psepbqxhez.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psdflnakpe.jpg |
I continue to remove the front suspension and steering rack...
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psngkruc25.jpg Removed the driver side wheel hub... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psykfqx4ar.jpg And both struts... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psdmmzhaji.jpg More parts out... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pslp75neai.jpg Driver side tie rod out... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps6kfncxve.jpg This side is giving me a lot of work to get out... then I remember that the previous owner had Turbo Tie Rods... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7pddruoz.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psq6mvhwrv.jpg I have to look through the boxes since I only see the Turbo Tie Rods but I do not see the spacers and boots... Anyway, that means that I am just going to unbolt the whole thing from the rack... easier than the struggle that I have been going through the last few hours trying to remove that sucker out! :banghead: The other surprise that I came across is this... When I removed the torsion bars... one (L) was great and easy to remove... the other one (R) :banghead: not so much... Letting it soak in WD40 to get the reverse lever out.. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pscjoxogt3.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psgjys7ji3.jpg So Left torsion bar is fine... it had grease all over and came out fine... Right one was dry, rust towards the reverse lever... I am no genius, but I am guessing that I will need a new one... good grief! |
I kept my mind busy with other tasks... put the torsion bars aside...
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7rn9gckm.jpg Nothing like a torch to release some of the stress, lol. Went on to remove the rubber bushings from just about everything... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psz9hj7ghk.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps6sfcb2en.jpg I thought about doing yellow-zinc electroplating on some of these parts, but this is not a restoration... so I will take all these parts to get powder coating in semi-gloss black. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psg6iycn3o.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb9tedmbe.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psov8eqjd8.jpg |
Well... I looked... tie rod spacers and rubber boots are not in any of the boxes that I got with the car... so far I have the following parts that I need to add to the order list:
4 - Sway Bar Bushing (for 20 mm Bar, Front) 2 - Spacing Washer for Tie Rod 2 - Steering Rack Boot, 911 Turbo 2 - Steering Rack Boot Inner Spring Retainer (might as well get those new just in case) and 2 - Front Torsion Bars (Stock units measure 18.6mm) EDIT: Did a few searches and read a lot... The recommendation that kept coming up was: Front: 22mm Torsion Bars - will go with Sway-A-Way Solid Front Torsion Bars for the price... At 267.00 for the set, it was the lowest torsion bars that I could find. Heavy Duty Strut Insert Bilstein - since I need to order a set, will go with these. Rear 28mm Torsion Bars - if the rear torsion bars are in the same condition... will get a new set as well Bilstein Sport rear (car has these and are in like-new condition) I need to wait until next month and will be placing another order from our host for these parts. Where are the emails with the discounts when you need them!! :) |
Used Elephant Racing's Suspension Build application... this is what it gave me with a Sport Restoration 1 option:
Front: Bilstein Heavy Duty Strut Inserts 21mm Plated & Plugged Hollow Front Torsion Bar Also suggests a strut brace - QuickChange Strut Brace All new bushings - Sway Bar, Chamber plate, Control Arms (I already have those coming...) Turbo Tie Rod (I already have that to install) Ball Joints (I already have those coming...) Rack Spacer Bump Steer Kit - Need to read on this... not sure what it is For the Rear: All new bushings (I already have those) 28mm Plated & Plugged Hollow Front Torsion Bar Bilstein HD Rear Shocks (I need to confirm which ones are in the car now... they look new, I just do not know which Bilstein type those are... ) Rubber Trailing Arm Bushings - These I do not have... might as well get them and replace the bearings while I am at it... It will be 2020 by the time I finish this car... |
As I was making the list of the parts to send to powder coating... I realized that maybe I should ditch the dust shields on the brakes... with that RS front bumper, I should route a hose to the rotors for better cooling instead. I wonder if anyone has modified the stock dust shields to incorporate a 3" hose into them...
The cooling duct adapters available for sale are 120.00 each... gives me enough incentive to at least try to use what I have... OR it will prove why they charge 120 for each duct adapter, lol!! Thinking about something like this: http://www.allstarperformance.com/product.htm?prod=359&part=ALL42115 http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psgncjis0v.jpg And modify them like this guy did for his truck... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps1efosa5n.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psqodcryfm.jpg Those adapters are around 33.00 each... |
