356 talk list Rant

I'm a 356registry member and I cannot figure out why they stay with that talk list. Is there a reason that they refuse to move to a forum like this. That talk list is so unmanageable, you cant post pictures, I hate it. Am I the only one who feels this way?

I was on it for several months probably 10 years ago. It drove me crazy too. I have no idea why they don't go to something newer and easier either. There is probably more knowledge there than any other forum on the good old 356.

Agreed - one of the reasons I am no longer a member.

I have been on 356Talk for 6 years. There is still some great content though the format is a bit dated. The great occasional content makes it worthwhile.

Yep, same here. I like the people but the format is nuts.

The problem as I see it is, 356 Talk clogs up e-mail, ask a question which is easy but get not only the answer for your query but everyone else's too.......On the other hand they seem to be more active than here. I do enjoy the Registry's other features, web pages and magazine, the archive search works relatively well.

I just figured the same guys who like 356s also prefer 3200 baud modems.

I'm all for the forum format, that said strong leadership is a must. I visit the 912 Registry BBS often but since Dave Hillman's tragic death, (the soul of of the 912 Registry), the situation over there has really been changed with all the reconfiguration of ownership. Then again the 356 Registry is a well established organization, hopefully if it does create a forum it will be well thought out and managed conscientiously as is most of their other business, or so it seems.

I believe the talk list format is in some ways superior to a BB for promoting participation.
This is because it demands your attention by coming into your mail box...it seeks you out rather than a board like this where you need to be proactive to visit this site. This feature could also be considered annoying but where else can you ask a question that goes directly into the mail box of the most knowledgeable 356 experts? Very few queries to the list go unanswered. I've asked questions to the list at 2:am in the midst of assembling an engine and have my answer within the hour from someone in Europe. Even if all the experts were on this board, they might not visit it for months. Of course the biggest downside is not being able to post pictures and the boring chatter about replicas.

When they change it to something more modern I'll re-join the 356 registry. Until then they can have their own little club.

Why rejoin? You know they don't care for us outlaw types.
Hope all is well.
Kind regards,
Chris Toy

Well I am actually going to put the bumpers back on. After 15 years and 3 different slight incidents that bumpers might have prevented. Or at least taken the majority of it. And you have to admit the magazine is pretty cool. Funny how my wife and dad told me long ago not to go with the Outlaw look.

What is your beef, anyway? Must everyone share your fascinations? Must it be your way or you get bent out of shape? The 356 registry is a 356 club. It makes no sense to me why you would want to change that. It makes about as much sense as trying to get Porsche replicas into a vintage guitar forum.

If you really care that much about how your car is received, just take out a loan and buy a Speedster already. Or perhaps you could start a MikeZ Club.

Confused,
Doug

I'm not convinced on the whole "we need a replica class in 356 Registry events" issue. Aren't there replica / kit clubs that have juried concours-like events? It's enough of a pain to sort through ebay's 356 listings to find a real one among the pretenders, much less the cognitive dissonance of judging replicas and the real things at the same event. and I LIKE kits & replicas!

Let your voice be heard

Those who feel that the talk list should be changed to a forum please contact the Registry president. If you are a member of the registry let him know your preference and if you are a former member, and would rejoin if the format was changed, please let him know that as well. There is a very vocal minority in that club that is very resistant to change, lets let them know how the rest of us feel.
