Jwest shifter binding

I recently purchased a used rennshift for my 86 915. It seems when i tighten the rod bracket the shifter binds. I've tried placing the bracket both on top of the tunnel and under the tunnel. Seems either way, it puts the bracket at an angle. If i leave the rod bracket disconnected everything shifts fine. WHAT AM I MISSING??

I appreciate any thoughts.

The guide bracket mounts directly to the bottom of the shifter and not to the chassis tunnel.

Think i figured the problem out. It appears that the shifter base had a small spacer attached to the bottom to relocate the rod bracket into the tunnel, instead of mounting on the top of the tunnel.
I glued 2, 1/2 brass bushings to the bottom of the base and installed with m6 1.00Χ40 bolts. The only issue is the bolts are not cap style, they are a Phillips head. Not sure how important the cap style bolts are for proper operation, but I'm trying to locate a few now and will replace them.

78 sc, you're absolutely right, but it needs a spacer or it pulls the rod up instead of staying horizontal.. thanks for the help..Steve

Seems like spacing the guide bushing downward would prevent the bushing on the lower end of the shift lever from seating properly in the socket on the end of the shift rod.

How do we know the rod has to be horizontal?

It didn't place it downward. It kept it inline to be straight.
Even with the bracket bolts finger tight right against the jwest base put the rod at an upward angle, which bound up the plastic rod bushing. Setting the rod bracket about 1/2 off the base stopped all the binding.
Apparently the new jwest bases don't require a spacer and the rod bracket stays on top of the tunnel.
It seems to be working properly, but cant drive it until i put my starter back in.

Just went to look at the cup bushing. There's less then an 1/8" of the bushing sticking out of the cup. I'm thinking that's pretty normal? It seemed that the jwest shifter lever might be just a touch longer than the factory lever!?

The older JWest shifters came with a small aluminum spacer to space the rod bushing down ~8mm (if my memory serves). The newer ones don't need it. Did you get that piece with your used shift console? Do you need measurements? I will be home tomorrow and can get dimensions for you.

RDM, i bought the shifter used and it didn't have the spacer. Ultimately i used a few 1/2" brass bushings to relocate the rod bracket. As of now the shifting is pretty good, but hoping to get it perfect with a little fiddling with the coupler.

The green wire is not a part of the installation (of course).
