Do I need a new Muffler?
Engine is out right now. When I separated the Cat from the Muffler black ceramic chunks came out of the cat so I ended up clearing the rest of the material from the inside, all the mesh and ceramic came out easily.
So I am wondering if the breakdown of the cat has ruined the muffler. Also, as you can see from the picture somehow the cat got a serious dent, can this be repaired and used as a cat bypass or should I just get an M&K bypass? It's an 84 with 105k miles. Appreciate the help! (PS: Jim I didn't want to bug you on a Sat.)

The last post in this thread suggests the dent is factory, to clear the lower shock bolt:
Euro pre muffler Mark

My initial thought was that it is causing back pressure but I guess it is intentional. Thanks.

Yes that "dent" is factory and yes it is restrictive. Reason for it is to clear the shock mount on the M491 optioned Carrera.

If you need to justify the spend to the significant other then you definitely need a new muffler. I got my m&k gt3 and headers being built as we speak...

It is a standard Carrera with a MFG date of 10-83, must have been right when they switched from the SC, and I believe the only option is the LSD diff. Is this 'dent' factory, I can't imagine how it would get there otherwise? I appreciate your feedback as I am really confused. Thanks

M491 began in 1984 and the "dent" in the premuffler/cat followed. Porsche put them on non-M491 models which seems logical as it reduces the need for two different versions.
