My '66 911 is making a worrying noise
I need some help. My '66 911 has an annoying noise that I can't figure out. Imagine brakes on a box truck when it's coming to a stop, or the noise my '58 Land Rover rear brakes make in reverse...that's what it sounds like, only not as loud. I think it's coming from the rear and it only happens at slow speeds, like when I'm coming to a stop. It's especially noticeable making slow left turns. It only does it when the car is warm, like after driving about 10 miles. The longer I drive, the worse it gets. It doesn't do it all the time. All efforts to replicate it where someone outside the car could tell where it's coming from have failed.
Up on the lift all the wheels turn freely and quietly. One thing I've noticed is the rear wheels are quite warm after driving. I don't know if that's engine heat or something else. The front wheels are always cool to the touch. Things I've thought about: - Rear wheel bearings, I replaced those last year (back story on that...the car was making a similar noise last year, but not as bad as now. I replaced the rear wheel bearings and thought it went away, but apparently not) - Front wheel bearings, repacked those when I did the rears - Sticky caliper(s), but why would making left turns make it worse? They've got about 10 years and 40K miles on a rebuild. - CV joints, can they make that noise? - Something in the transmission, I prefer not to think about that This is seriously eating into my summer driving time and I need to fix it, but I don't want to just start throwing parts and time and $$$ at it hoping the noise goes away. I need some guidance as to maybe a starting point.

What about the e-brake shoes/hardware?
Easy enough to pull the rear rotors off to check. That would also attest to higher temps if something is rubbing in there. Just a thought. Tom |

Hey Rich, do you have a laser temp gun? If so, you could fine tune where the heat is coming from. Those rear wheel bearings can be a little tricky and the CV joints are not available anymore...but they can certainly wear and they will be worse in one direction of turning.
Easy enough to check the movement of the pads/pistons in the calipers to see if something is sticking. Remove the wheel and try move the pad/piston. we can chat tonight at dinner. We recently did all this on my 67S so its pretty fresh in my memory.
