Can someone tell me how to replace the reference sensor and speed sensor for my '86?
We've checked or replaced practically everything else in the DME system, including plug wires, cap and rotor, the CHT sensor, and even an oil change. I know *where* the sensors are. I just need to know if they're something that can be replaced without an engine drop or not.

Pretty sure they're doable in the car Mark. Off the top of my head I think you can get at them better than the CHT sensor.
I do know that both myself and a friend had a heck of a time getting one of the two sensors out of the bracket on our cars. We both ended up mangling it pretty good to get it out of the bracket. I'm guessing you'll have the same situation. Bracket is removeable, so you can battle with in on the workbench. It's entirely possible that these ref. sensors are your problem. The wire sheathing gets cooked by the engine/exhaust heat and splits. Then the wires get boogered from exposure. What sucks is the cost of these sensors. $125 ea.!!!! OUch. Mark which one goes where when you unplug them. If you reconnect the wrong ones, the car won't start.
