Door Stop Pin-Scratching my head

So how is the pin (bottom right) supposed to be installed? The pin only goes into the hinge portion on the A-post half way until it hits the raised splines. You sure don't want to have those splines gnaw at the door stop arm hole. Then there's the lock clip.....scratching my head. Do chime in.
Cheers,
Johan

I'd just replace that with a hardware store clevis pin with a hole for a small cotter pin.

+1 on Ewans point. I´ve read that others have similar problems with the pin. The solution seems to be a small bolt that fits with a Nylock nut

According to the porsche manual, the pins are 'driven' into the door strap. I know the ones on my '89, the pins must be pressed out so I am assuming the groved pin has to bite into the door strap, thus the need to drive/press them in and out.

Hi Todd,

As per the link I posted on this thread, I did install a new door stop
which worked perfectly for about 3 months.

Then, the "clanking" started.

I just replaced it with a new door stop to no avail.

For our M/Y 86, there is no way that the grooves on
new hinge pin will fit all the way through the two holes on the body,
or the strap.

I did minimize the "clanking" but, it is not nearly as quiet
as the original passenger side.

Thanks for your inputs.

Best,

Gerry

Thanks Todd and Gerry. I like the idea of smoothing out the ribbing on the pin per Gerry's link. Also like that mod to eliminate the awful clanking that these replacement door stops make. Lousy quality. I'm adding this to my winter list.
Cheers,
Johan

That tech article is so old it has started to receive junk mail from the AARP.

It really needs to be updated to address the clicking problem that develops after installing these new door stops (due to spring pressure that is too high when going over the detent).

Thanks for pointing out the clicking issue and I will have one of our tech guys look into updating it with this new info.

Yes, please do, this part should be "Plug & Play".

I'm on my second door stop replacement,
which works no better than the original.

The passenger door stop works perfectly.

It helps to grind down most of the hump on the new door stop.

This product is not good. The door arrester is so hard that it contributes to weakening of the interior door panel. Then that pin is too long and the ribbing mauls the pin hole, if you manage to even get it in all the way. Should be pulled off the web IMHO.

I agree, but PAG has been using this unit since '87! The pre '87 model year unit was a better part in my opinion, however PAG decided to reengineer for '87 and forward years. If you think us G body guys have a problem, consider the horror the 964/993 guys face. Instead of the arrestor some times tearing the sheet metal where it mounts to the door, the 964/993 are notorious for ripping out the sheet metal on the A pillar where the pin mounts!

Here's the earlier part that should have never been "reengineered". If you can
ever find any NOS for sale (or good used ones), jump on them!!

Guys,
Bad parts just irk me. In my previous P car I used that reinforcing plate referred to above with limited success. The iner door frame eventually started the give again especially when I replaced the hard clanking door stay.So I made two robust L -shaped brackets to go inside the door each one bolted to the back of the door stay (longer thru bolts poking thru into a hole on the short side of the L + a washer and nut) with the longer arm bolted to the inside door panel. Held for 10 years but the a pirouette into corner four followed by a 2 1/2 barrel roll ended that. Gave me an excuse to build the RST. Rescued an old type door stay from the crash which I installed into the passenger door. Operates nicely and is quiet. The new drivers door one sounds like two slingshots against the door panel. I convinced myself that it would soften up so I unfortunately installed without the mods outlined in the link above. I should have researched it more. Just irks me when I have to deal with lousy products. There, finally feel better.
Johan

Just wanted to let everyone know that we have updated the tech article with a link to info that uwanna posted above. It's now added as a note at the bottom of the tech article with a link to the page of that thread that helps fix the clicking noise.

Thanks Ed!!!!!

This worked for me after I tried trimming
the two rubber "bumpers" as per uwanna member.

The trimming did help a bit, but the grinding removed
all of the "clanking"

Best,

Gerry

Update to this old post:
I installed the new style door stays in my G body. I did not trim, not grind, the new stay. I simply lubricated them with teflon lube prior to installation. The stays work beautifully.
The pin issue does remain. I reused the original roll pins.
Cheers
