Isn’t that the truth...
Troubleshooting has always been my Achilles heel, and intermittent things are extra challenging, but I want it fixed, so I’ll keep plodding along. Never say your plans out loud, but I’m hoping to have a summer of driving with no major projects. If we decide to keep the car another season, next winter will be a suspension refresh. It’s actually not too bad now, but I’d like to rid some minor squeaks and clean up some things...possibly add turbo tie rods. Nothing major... |
My morning brought on an unplanned project for this week.
Damn near lost the car. Full write-up in my thread. |
Had to cobble a temporary vacuum pipe so I could run the car while the OEM pipe is having a new hose crimped on...

Looking forward to getting the car out for a few miles this weekend, and going my notes…
The main reason for the engine drop was to send the gearbox to CMS for a rebuild, but here are the “While You Are There” projects that were done after reading a lot of Pelican threads. Our primary pleasure in this car is driving it, so I tried to balance the list with what could be achieved in within the trans rebuild time window and have the thing ready to drive by Spring weather. • 915 rebuilt by CMS. • Oil Return Tubes • Clutch / Flywheel / Pilot Bearing • Rear Flywheel Seal • Triangle of Death – Oil Pressure Switch / Thermostat O-ring / Breather Gasket • Breather Hoses • Oil Cooler Seals • Crank Sensors / CHT Sensor • Powdercoat engine tins and various other parts • Tunnel Fuel Lines – Thanks Len! • Fuel Lines on Engine – Thanks Kuehl! • Throttle Rod Bushings in Tunnel • Make new O2 Sensor Bullet • Replace cracked plugs on Crank Sensor Harness • Plug Wires • Sent DME out for resolder • Engine Sound Pad • Dash Lighting Fuse • Headlight Relay • Unrelated, but new foam in driver’s seat, Ha! • Intended to send the Cruise module out for repair, but didn't get there. Unrelated Stuff: • Added a bridge jack to my 4-post lift. Not just for this project, but it hastened the purchase. Good addition to the garage, but wish I has sprung for the air powered version. • Built a lift table with a tilting platform that was really helpful for a newbie safely dropping the engine. Regrets: You always have to draw the line somewhere, but that also means you’ll have some second guessing going on. • I kind of wish I had removed the Heat Exchangers, primarily for cosmetic reasons though. Edit - to have them refinished. • Probably should have tackled a couple of the oil tank lines, but I was really concerned about the slippery slope that might be encountered. It will have to wait for another day. A few minor issues to sort, but I am hopeful we'll have a nice summer of driving this old thing... Thanks again to all here that have helped and encouraged along the way! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1619597675.jpg |
Being an IN resident without heat, I'd urge you to make sure you have an alternative way of 'taking the edge off' if you remove the heat.
I have heated seats and a bit of heated air from the engine-mounted oil cooler to the defrost vents. It still gets brisk inside the car on chilly mornings/evenings. |
Sorry should have clarified. I meant remove the exchangers to make the oil tube job easier, and clean them up while they are out.
This car has good working heat and AC...:) (I’ll have a hot rod one day though) |
Sometimes I get lost in the minutiae of things...
Has always annoyed me that my battery lugs have regular nuts on them. Very little wrench bite and they hang up on the ring terminals. Knocked up a set of shoulder nuts on a break...but now I still need to do the actual task I was avoiding...ha! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1620899671.jpg |
In my theme of doing projects in reverse sequence, I'm already planning the next winter project...suspension refresh.
It is still taut and responsive, but a few creaks and squeaks that I'd like to have gone. Have read a lot of threads of course, and I'm at the most common fork in the road of whether to go rubber or polybronze. For this particular car, I'm leaning toward a simple rubber refresh. I have the whole summer to wring hands though... ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1621772238.jpg |
Couple hundred miles since getting the box back in, so time to check the CV bolts and adjust the clutch. Hopefully an evening cruise tonight...

Gorgeous day today, so I threw a cooler in back and some Jackson Browne on the box and headed out to explore some old favorite Hoosier backroads.
Took the Rising Sun ferry across the Ohio and dipped down into Kentucky for a break in Rabbit Hash. On the return trip, I got off the beaten path a bit and followed some country lanes till they trickled off into single track. I’ve owned a lot of interesting cars and bikes, but nothing bombs backroads like this one...full stop. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1622418745.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1622418745.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1622418885.jpg |
Well poop…
Finished up some loose ends and got the car prepped for a long weekend at Parade in French Lick, but 2-3 days of thunderstorms means that we will likely take the Cayman instead. A shame because it’s in the best state since we brought it home 3 years ago. The bright side is there’s lots of summer and fall driving weather left! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626353201.jpg |
Did a nice weekend drive around southern Indiana, so spent the morning cleaning things up a little. Just shy of 900 miles on the refreshed box now, so time to do a lube change…

No fettling this weekend as we took the car up the Indy for Luft 7 and the Sportscar Together Fest at the Indianapolis Speedway. We stayed downtown on the Circle and had a really great couple of days just enjoying this car...
I posted a few pics in the Luft thread, but thought I'd put the Speedway shots over here. Up early to head to the track... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg Chilly and dark, but all smiles http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg They staged us out on the back straight. We used to come here as kids and watch the cars rip through here at over 200mph. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg Got to do quite a few parade laps. Not too fast, but still a great way to start the day! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg Our hillbilly G-Meter... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg PCNA dealing the crack. This is the garage with pallets of tires to keep the autocross cars going all weekend. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg Watched a lot of great air cooled cars blasting the track http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg The Luft corral... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg Back at the Bottleworks Hotel for some glamour shots... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631628266.jpg |
Great shots!
It's a shame to have missed you. Looks like our schedules overlapped a lot. |
I know, right? Was hoping to see your beastie in person!
