Removing the front latch panel is a beeeyatch, but the rear, reflector panel is relatively easy......drill out the spot welds, chisel the seam. I'm using a spot weld chisel that is sharpened on 3 edges, making it easier to get the chisel into the seam and then hammer it sideways, along the seam to separate the pieces. Then you take a cutoff wheel to the ends and it drops to the floor.

I felt compelled to tape the TRE rear RS bumper on for a test fit. This is a TRE metal backdate kit.......the front fenders, hood, latch panel are metal, but the front & rear bumpers are fiberglass bits. I laid the engine lid on there too.......nothing is properly aligned...just laying the pieces on there to get 1st impressions of the fit and looks.

This will be duck-less and have an early non-RS front bumper/valence. Should be a clean machine.

I am well underway on installing the new suspension bits....more pix to come.

regards,
al

Backdating requires tools of destruction.....not for the faint of heart.......but lily will not require a Sawzall for the WEVO update.................Tacho headed to Seattle Speedometer for some mods.......soon this project will start to look like something......stay tuned.

latch panel and hood

I have been out sick with a cold for the last week or so....so little progress was made.....but today I finally joined the land of the living and had at it. The project is at the point where parts are going on, instead of coming off....and visible progress should be happening much more quickly now. Front latch panel is in and just about ready for welding....and the new long-hood is in place. i'll install the new fenders back on to ensure fitment/gaps etc........and then weld the latch panel in.
The engine case is headed back from Ollie's...so engine build will fire up next week too!
3.2 to 3.5......should be a monster!!!

OK......this is an AC equipped car, headed to a very hot country...so the AC is staying. I have removed the shifter console with the AC controls in it and plan to relocate the AC controls to the radio delete panel. Anybody have good examples of this or alternative ideas????

Originally I thought this was just another back date thread. Yea, right.

I should have known Al would take it to the next level. Nice work.

I personally liked UWON's solution best shown in frame #144 of the following link...

I am watching your build with interest.

More progress made today on the Carrera backdate.....Aligning the fenders hood, test fitting the front bumper/valence (hmmm, a bit of work needed there)...the 3.2 case, opened up for 3.5 cylinders, is back from Ollie's. also had the galleys/squirters cleaned/checked w/new plugs, etc. Test fitted one of the cylinders...wow...like butter!. Interior is a total clusta at the moment....typical 80's era...full of stereo and alarm ****e, needing to be removed. All of the Motronic is being removed/replaced with a Rasant AEM/Infinity kit. Lots happening.

A right fine mess.

As mom used to say, you are never too poor to be clean and neat. I am calling your health department.

al lkosmal 02-22-2019 08:24 AM

Rick....A creative mess is better than idle neatness..... and it will get slightly worse before it gets better............lots of wiring to remove. got to get it all out..I'll weigh the stereo stuff (amp/speakers/CD/radio) and alarm when completely removed...it is heavy.

Maybe the gofundme needs to be for a lift? :D
Hurts my back just thinking about this. ;)

RSBob 02-22-2019 06:16 PM

My sincere apologies Al. In no way was I commenting on shop cleanliness. A mess there is to be expected. I was going to call the mental health dept. Amazing that omitting one simple word can do. Sorry for the confusion

Rick!....what!! you must have thought that you hurt my last feeling... no way...you and I are good friends and constantly amuse each other with our sarcastic comments and dry wit...or lack thereof...... we are easily amused, but we are not alone and no confusion and no apologies are required from you, ever.....at the moment, the farking shop does look like several 911s exploded in there and the same reply applies to the mental health as well......Creative mess is better than idle neatness........it's better to burnout than to fade away..although i may have lasted too long already for that to apply. This project and my 69 Cafe Racer are underway and you are always welcome to join in the creative clutter......online or in person.

Yep, This is a Mahle motorsport + Nickies set with Nickies 100mm cylinders and Mahle pistons (JE available too).... These cylinders will not slip fit into the stock spigots and require machining the spigots out to 105mm.......The heads were also machined to ensure proper size/finish for sealing.
I've used Nickies for several engine builds now and they are beautiful bits.

al
