thanks, the 3.5 build for this project will be configured with PMO/ITBs and the Rasant/AEM dual plug kit. Everything is on my shelves, just waiting for me to get to it. regards, al |
bushings AFU
A-arms etc are out for powder-coating, etc....As nice and well kept as this Carrera was....I'd say that the front suspension was overdue for some attention............Front A-arm bushings look good, but the rear A-arm bushings (where the weight/load is) are toast and did a number on the front t-bars too!..........

Al,
Are those t-bars the original "19mm" bars or aftermarket Powerbarz- SwayAWay I believe? Reason I ask is because the origional Porsche t-bars are typically black. At least my original '87 bars were. Also be sure to take a look at the front crossmember location below the t-bar lever caps. Badly flowed bushings usually show a wear mark there. I think it's a very good idea to keep the torsion bar supported higher by laying a weld bead on the bottom of the lever cap. Remember this thread? :D (click on the first link in my post #3 in the thread below and you'll see we were talking bushings back in 2008! Man how time flies.....) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/842479-front-cross-member-wear.html Also i'm curious what was your guide in choosing the machine-in 100mm cylinders vs. the slip-fit cylinders? Not questioning your choice. Just wondering since there's two options to go with when using 100mm Nickies for this engine case. Slip-fit https://lnengineering.com/products/aircooled-cylinders-pistons/porsche-911-1978-98/porsche-911-930-33-35-slip-fit-100mm-nickies.html Machine-in https://lnengineering.com/products/aircooled-cylinders-pistons/porsche-911-1978-98/porsche-911-930-33-35-100mm-nickies-machine-in-105mm-case-register.html Thanks and keep up the great work! |
Kevin,
I do remember that thread and will check for wear on the cross-member. The t-bars are Sway-A-Way.(getting replaced with Sanders T-bars) You are correct that there are two versions of 3.5 cylinders....slip-fit and machine-in. however, the case spigots are 103mm, so the difference between the slip-fit and machine in is cylinder wall thickness. With 100mm cylinder I.D., the slip fit have a much thinner cylinder wall thickness. Machining the case spigot to 105mm allows the use of the machine in cylinder, which have thicker cylinder walls. Might not make a significant difference, but after reviewing the options with LN tech support, at 10.5:1 compression, I opted for the stronger cylinders for this build. regards, al |
Thanks for the feedback. I was aware of the slip-fit cylinder's reduced thickness and I remembered that LN indicated their increased strength allowed for the reduced wall. I was just surprised to find that they made both sizes. I guess it makes sense that they should give buyers the option of choosing either a reduced strength cylinder (but still sufficient) and no machining of the spigots, or a typical wall thickness and machine the spigots accordingly.
Which then begs the question, why didn't you go with the 3.7L 102mm cylinders if you were committed to machining the spigots anyway? ;) |
But this one goes up to 11.......
Similar to the trade-offs and judgement calls we discussed above. Opening up the case spigot reduces the case/cylinder sealing surface. The 3.5/100mm machine-in opens the spigot up to 105mm. The O.D. of the case/cylinder sealing surface is 113.5mm. This leaves a fairly healthy 4.25mm wide annular sealing ring width, except where it is adjacent to a through-bolt or stud...it can neck down to 2.15mm or so. (see pic below)
The 3.7/102.5 requires the spigot to be opened up even more to 106.5-107. The O.D. of the sealing surface is still 113.5mm, so that leaves a 3.25 wide sealing ring, except where it is adjacent to a through bolt or stud, where it can neck down to 1.15mm or so..........so once again is it a strength and, in this case, a sealing consideration......combined with price/performance as well. Hopefully my math is correct, but you get the drift. More is also less..... regards, al http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1552003056.jpg |
clusta-fook
Here's 25 lbs worth of aftermarket Stereo, Amp and alarm .....................
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1552004510.jpg regards, al PS: actually a very nice rig...just no longer required for this project. |
Spinal Tap reference................. NICE!!! :D
Thanks for confirming what I suspected. The spigot meat near the thru-bolt holes gets very thin as you open it up! And it's not much better near the head stud holes!! |
you might want to sit down before viewing.......
latest delivery...care package from Stefan at GTS Classics. These are ST & R seats with early S headrests, done in perf leather w/corduroy inserts and clear gelcoat on the buckets. The pix do not do these justice....they are flippin beautiful.

Love those seats. Are they comfy?
|
Ah those were your seats that Stefan posted Al. Great choice. I had Stefan make me a set of the Turismos with amber shells. Took a while longer for the shells, but so worth it in the end. Yours look amazing.

Last round of powder-coated bits have arrived. The front end suspension will be re-assembled this week...with 21mm hollow Sanders torsion bars, new bushings, tie rod ends, Boxster brakes, Tarret swayber, etc. Also the front latch panel is 95% done (PITA), seam sealer applied, as well as a little body work/blending to fit well.

Carrera backdate (Slight Return)
It has been a while since i last posted, but much is happening.
Latch panel install is complete and the front fenders and hood are mounted and pretty much in alignment..with some minor tweaking still required. Rear suspension (with the exception of the swaybar) is installed, with wheels and tires installed (7x9/16. Front suspension is installed (Boxster brakes, Bilstien shocks, Tarrett sways and 21/29 Sanders t-bars) and I'm now dialing in the preliminary ride height, etc. Also.....the 3.5 engine build is underway....man, Ollie's work on the case is top-notch, the heads from Cgarr really turned out great, the Webcam cams are awesome and the Nickies cylinders/Mahle pistons are works of art. Combine all of that with 46mm PMO/EFI and the Rasant/AEM Infinity kit and ....I can wait to fire this mother up!!! But still lots to be done. Stay tuned..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509945.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554509945.jpg |
