911 car dies when Oil cap is removed

I just bought my 84 Carrera and wanted to check the oil level. I left in idle as manual instructs. Just as I remove the oil cap the car dies. I thought it was something else and tried again to confirm. Anyone know whats going on?

The idle should drop a little bit when the cap is removed, that's normal. Try bumping your idle up if it is already low.

Assuming the restrictor is in place, the mixture might be too lean.

With the oil cap on and your car warmed up, what RPM is the car idling at?

You create a bit of a normal vacuum leak when you remove the oil cap - the car should be able to withstand this, and the rpm's will drop, but not to the point of stalling. If you already have a vacuum leak elsewhere, then the problem is compounded with the cap removal. The problem can be masked if you increase the idle, but the PO may have done this already.

Best thing to do would be to check for vac leaks for all of the lines to/from the air box, throttle body, carbon canister, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pres damper, cruise control, and brake booster. Also verify the intakes are tight - no leaks around the gaskets.

If you just got the car and this is happening, chances are it was neglected a little bit, and if you try to correct it, your car will love you for it. Do a search on this very topic and you'll get some more info. It really does help / albeit incrementally, to replace the rubber stuff. Good luck and hth.

There is a valve on the breather hose that is failing

If the check valve is failing, here are some pictures.

I know this is an old thread, but i came here looking for help to solve my same issue.

My scenario was a little different, freshened up motor reinstall and mine was doing this.

Turned out to be my breather restrictor was in the wrong hose. ( replaced my hoses )
