Muffler options for hot 3.0
As i'm finalizing my engine, i'm looking to pick up a muffler for my build that I initially intend to run with my SSi's. The engine is a DC60 cam, 10.6:1 3.0 on 46mm PMO's and 12 plug. I know there are a number of off the shelf options, but I was thinking about fabbing up my own system with a stainless muffler and some nice mandrel bends.
Also, I want to exit in the stock location. ![]() |

Just spend the cash and obtain an M&K 2in 2out. You will be very happy with that application coupled to SSI's and that 3.0L!

M&K 's are nice items but they are loud.
If loud is good, then go for it. 2 out's of any brand seem to have at least some drone issues. I've got an M&K 2 in one out on my 3.0 with headers and webbers. It's louder than I would like, but no drone, and probably the purest sound short of open pipes that I've heard from any muffler.

Dyno results show almost 0 decrease in HP over straight pipes.

The GT3 muffler looks great but sure is pricey. The M&K stuff looks good overall, but I have not heard one and don't care for going too loud if I can avoid it. I thought I recall a forum user getting a custom M&K 2 in 1 out with a 3" outlet?

Built this for mine with old race mufflers and some bends. Two in and 2 out, just a bit of fab and your good.

My favorite for my mild hot rod... Elgin Mod-S cams, Weber 40s with 36 venturi, heads ported and cleaned up and about 9.5:1 has been the factory 74 exhaust. I ran a couple sport type muffler and my car liked a little back pressure to produce seat of the pants torque.
I never did any dyno time but just my thoughts on this one.

Go to you local muffler shop and check out a 2in/2out Flowmaster or Magnoflow for a Camato V8 with 2.5in mandrel bent pipes. Worked get with my old twin-plugged EFI 2.8. Cheap, smooth power/torque with great tolerable sound.

Why not a Leistritz factory muffler? You can always do the 2 tube sport conversion.

exhaust
This is funny.I built this exhaust in 1991.It makes 25 H.P. more than an SSI System. It looks like a Boxster. The motor is a short stroke 2.8 built on 930/02.Makes 374 H.P.at 9300.248 ft.lbs. of torque from 4600-8800 rpm.Power is the ability to scavenge your combustion.Peter Dawe tuned this engine with the Motec Slide Valve 45mm set up.Thanks Peter.Fred Apgar Please send you email to carolapgar@hot mail.com for a picture. No one builds a GREAT HEADER system anymore.

9,300 RPMs... I am having a bit of a difficult time trying to understand how you are getting revs that high. How on Earth are you getting that from a 2.8L? Twin plugs? How often do you have to rebuild it, etc.? Keep in mind that a 2.7L has a traditional redline of 6,500 rpms.

And my 3.0L is a monster of an engine and at best I can barely get 7,300 rpms out of it. Still confused how a non-race engine pulls almost 10,000k. That seems almost mythical as it creeps up into motorcycle land!

Why gt3 muffler? Very strong and can take the power and abuse. The internal design is extremely high flow and tuned so at lower revs the baffle absorbs the noise and at higher revs it becomes almost a straight pipe. They work very well. My 964 is getting a 991turboS muffler. Design is similar but I want dual exits vs cemter exit.
