I have recently bought a 86 Carrera with 77k and have gone through the car mechanicly from top to bottom. I have no problem with the cars power just gear multiplication. I was wondering if any one has put the Seine gated shift kit on the 915 tranny and would recomend it. I do not want a short shift kit ,I realy just want to be able to find forth gear when coming out of 5th and vice versa. Also if and when I purchase the Seine kit I do plan on doing all the bushing while Im there and I would Tig weld the lever. What scare me about the kit is that hose clamp. That just looks so hack.

I have heard nothing but good about their kit. It's also one of the most fairly priced.

FWIW the kit specifically recommends welding the tab when you get it adjusted. Since each gearbox is slightly different, and each lever adjusted differently (either on purpose or "just because") the hose clamp is a necessity in order to get that bracket right where you want it.
For instance my lever is set up with short shift and adjusted at a slight angle to account for my short arms and shift pattern. The only alternative would have been to drill (BAD idea) or to provide a lever with the kit pre-welded which would have increased the cost. Get it adjusted, weld it, ditch the hose clamp, simple.

How does it work, are the detents more defined.I understand the lever need adjusting to get it right and I have a collection of welders and that doesn't really bother me. I just want to find forth give with out a 10 delay or going into second yikes!!

Sherwood, who frequents this board and who made the kit, will chime in on this one I hope. He can probably do a better job explaining it, but I'll have a go...
The kit works through two methods... First, the spring mounted on the right side of the housing uses adjustable spring tension to center the lever on the 3-4 region of the pattern. This helps guide the shifter more towards center. It also adds a tabbed plate that sits on the left side making the mechanics of getting the car into first and second a bit more "deliberate" very similar to how the 5th gear detent works. THe goal here is to make it less likely to pull a 3-2 or 4-1 or even 5-2 downshift. I've installed it, but haven't tested it on the track yet, but have run thru a typical shift pattern up and down. It definitely makes the 3-4 and 4-3 shifts more "intuitive".

Ouch, I can relate to that over rev I guard my clutch with my life. If the thing would shift smoother it would be a true monster of a ride.I have watched that video a bunch of times .

Just want to chime in here and tell you that I have had my Gate-Shift kit installed since last August, and it is great. Provides a good piece of mind if one let's it do it's job of keeping the shift lever in the 3rd / 4th shift gate. Downshifting at speed from 5th to 4th is alot more peaceful of a situation mentally....
you can't go wrong, and Sherwood provides a 30 day $$$ back guarantee...and he is a big time "stand-up" guy. No worries there my friend. good luck!!

$$ back? $$ back? $$ back? ... quote from Paul Dooley's used car salesman character from one of my favorite movies, "Breaking Away" (1979).
Thanks for the positive comments, Sherwood |

I have the Seine kit too. Well made and easy to install.
I like the new feeling the shift kit gives my 2nd to 3rd shift. Now I lightly push the gear shift forward out of 2nd. When it exits 2nd it springs towards the right into the 3/4 gate. So then I just push the lever forward into 3rd. That's just one example. Just let the Seine shift kit do it's job and you'll have less chance of a missed shift. Now that I have raced with the Seine kit I could not imagine racing without it. |
