Costco will not sell me shoes for my 86 Carrera

Went to get some new shoes for my 86 which currently has 205/55/16 - 255/50/16 stock. I recently bought some 8's/16 for the back and costco will not put the 7's in the front and the 8's in the back, as it's a liability for them...........................ARGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

The 7s will not fit in the front, I believe. Wrong offset.

Yes, I believe Costco won't stray far from stock sizes. Your series Carerra '84-'89 all had 6" fronts as stock I believe. BTW - did you mean your current sizes are 205 & 225?

I tried to get some tires at Costco for my wife's car and was fortunate enough to get a different tire size than originals because the diameters were less than 3% larger than stock for that year.

It would be nice if they just had the customer sign a waiver saying they understand the different tires may change the characteristics of the car and waive Costco liability.
Seems it would run a bit deeper than that however.

Can you just bring them them wheels to mount the tires to? 2 wheels at a time?

I never bring my Porsche to get tires- always just bring the wheels. DD, they can have the car too!

The ‘86 had three wheel sizes offered:
Stock were phone dials 15x6 with 195/65-15 and 15x7 with 216/60-15
Fuchs option of 15x7 and 15x8 with the same tire sizes
2nd Fuchs option of 16x6 with 205/55-16 and 16x7 with 225/50-16

On my first ‘86 that I had ordered new I ordered with stock phone dials not wanting to pay an up charge for Fuchs since I had a set of Fuchs 16x7, 16x8 that I was going to take off my ‘83 SC that I was trading in. But the car got built with the damn 16” Fuchs, seems the factory assumed since I’d spec’d the car with spoilers, limited slip and sport seats that I must have forgotten the “performance” 16” wheels. So the dealer took the phone dials off another new 911 in the showroom to put on mine and took the up charge off the price

My current ‘86 was delivered New with the 15x7,8 Fuchs per the options tag, were still on the car when I bought it in 2008.

The reason I share all this is because perhaps the OP can tell the tire shop that in fact 7&8” wheels were a factory option, just don’t tell them it was 15” instead of 16. Rolling diameter of the 15’s and 16’s is virtually identical.

However, on all the SC’s and Carreras I’ve owned over the past 35 years I’ve had to roll the front wheelwell lips to move the 7’s from the back to the front.

Moving the 7's up front will work; I did the same thing with my '86 when I added 8's to the back. You may want to roll the fenders though, especially if your car is lowered.

The 7ET23.3 whether 15 or 16 fit the front fine, lowered cars may need a bit of work at the lips

Wheel and Tire size.............

I currently have 7x16 Fuchs front wheels with 205-55-16 tires and 8x16 Fuchs rear wheels with 245-45-16 tires. Sizes fit well with no front fender interference and the car is sitting at just a tad lower than the Euro height. With this arrangement, the car handles great. The one size larger rear tires got rid of most of the oversteer tendencies the car was experiencing. When the car needs tires, I pull the wheels and take them in to a shop to have the new rubber mounted and balanced. Maybe Costco is not the place where you need to shop for tires?

I factory ordered 7&8s 16 on my 1988 911 paint to sample car back in the day.

As for Costco you can order the tires just have them installed at a local indy shop. I use Costco prices and have Americas tires price match and install. My local America tires shop is great to work with.

I have had no problems at the local Costco with tires for the family cars.
Purchased tires from tire rack last yr. And had a local performance shop mount and balance them.
They race and service mostly Lotus and some Porsche.

The last time I used Costco, I had the same issue.

PLUS the manager was IGNORANT and DISRESPECTFUL.

He became incensed when I proved that my wheels were in fact 7" when he had incorrectly measured them at 8".

I had a Panorama in my car to show that in fact 911s used 7 and 8" wheels.

I can share other stories, but at least in San Diego at more than one location, I am not sure what they were smoking.

I have said it before, if you go to costco for tires, you will regret it.

And when they try to jack up your car under the rightside "A" pillar and smash your oil lines, they will call the cops claiming fraud when they see the price for replacement. I use a local LLoyd's Tire, Santa Cruz, they are responsive happy to listen, and last time I gave a mini jacking class for 911s. The shop manager was going to buy a jack point paddle and appreciated my willingness to educate the guys in the shop. I also explained the colored dots on the sides of the tires. I guess that day in A&P school paid off. By knowing where the heavy point on the tire helps with balancing.
Costco, dogfood and toilet paper.

Same here. Zero chance I turn my car over to a tire shop or worse yet Costco. That’s just asking for crushed oil lines and stripped/cross threaded/ruined alloy lug nuts.

I brought my car to an Indy tire shop...owned by a PCA member, and the installer almost crushed my oil lines when jacking up the car. From now on I remove the wheels and just bring those down for a tire swap....much less stressful.

What I do is stand by like a vulture waiting for a wildebeast to expire. Most installers, mechanics appreciate a heads up on a different car. I specify no air wrenches. Like I said, my tire shop is receptive and I will continue to use them.

No way would I want a tire shop to put my car on the lift. Wouldn't fit anyway.

Even just bringing the rims can be scary enough.
