Connected Battery to wrong terminals
I pulled a major bonehead today when trying a different type of battery in my 72. I connected the second battery to the wrong terminals (positive cable to negative battery post). When I turned the ignition, a puff of smoke and burning smell from engine compartment. After correcting, the engine starts and runs fine but the alternator light stays on at all rpms. I'm looking for advice on what to check first. Thanks

You blew the alternator diodes. Needs rebuild.

Lucky the CD unit didn't die too. May be some melted wires at the alternator when you get it out.

I stupidly did the same thing recently in haste in a dark garage... Not only did I roast my alternator, but I also fried most of the ground wires in the engine harness. My car also started after the incident, but I recommend you take out your alternator to inspect the wires. I suspect you won't be happy with what you find.
