930 Brake upgrade on early 930

Even though i had already installed a boxter upgrade on my 77 930 to improve the early brakes, i'd been toying with the idea of upgrading to 930 stuff for some time and finally pulled the trigger to buy all new parts.
4 New calipers from Sunset Porsche
2 new front hats from VCI
4 new rotors, 4 new protection plates and pads and all new hardware from Pelican
Perfect machine work from Steve Weiner.

The fronts are pretty straight forward although i forgot the 3mm spacers and had to special order them from Pelican.
Here is what i had

The rears on a early 930 are slightly different than a 911 as the mounting tab has a different orintation than on a 911. You can see the original protection plate was trimed to fit the boxter caliper. Now i wish it wasnt done that way.

I used a later 930 protection plate by reversing the mounting orinatation. Even though its for an later setup, it is mounted and sandwiched between the trailing arm and parking brake plate just like the early 77 backing plate is. The early turbo protection plates are not the same as the 911 protection plate, so this would not work on a 911 without really modifing the protection plate.

Curious what the parts list on that upgrade ran versus a BBK?

Because it easy enough to look up anyway, its no real secret, so i ll share....The cost of this upgrade was NOT CHEAP. I sourced all new parts over a several months as to make far less $ painful. But isn't there some sort of code that states we should never look at our old invoices and add up what we have spent ?
I honestly looked for used parts but when guys are asking $2000 for used set of calipers, it just didnt make sense and i wasnt likely to buy used rotors anyway. The front rotors and hats are the killer because we are so engrained to think they shouldn't be so expensive...... I had the choice of finding non floating hubs for $ 800 and non floating rotors for cheap or using period correct floating hubs and and expensive front rotors. Either way it was going to cost.

Here what to expect to spend on new parts:
4 new calipers 2216
2 sets of pads 205
2 new front rotors 700
2 new rear rotors w retain screws 254
2 new front hats w hardware 550
2 machined calipers w banjo 565
4 new protection plates 140
2 new front lines 22
2 new rear lines 25
8 new bolts and washers 50
Total $ 4727
930 M/C, Shipping and Califronia Sales Tax not included

I alrerady had a 930 master cylinder installed so add $ 265

I' ll have a complete Boxter conversion for sale in case anyone is interested

What needs a little more clarification is that the 75-77 turbo , with its parking brake adjuster/ cable arrangement location, will not allow mounting of the caliper in the standard 78-89 position.
The castings have the mounting tabs (undrilled) , but you can't make it happen unless you remove all the e brake parts.

Nice job Steve!

Having only known the previous brake setup, i thought they were pretty good. These 930 brakes are PHENOMENAL ! The braking power is unreal

Not so on mine. The tabs were already drilled and machined (shaved 3mm) on one side - I just had to tap and helicoil them.
BTW, I elected to keep them mounted on the leading edge for better weight distribution - closer to the center of gravity.

Probably felt bad to do the machining on a brand new set of calipers? Oh well, gotta do what you gotta do to make them fit.

Nice job. Looks fantastico.

I know this is an older thread but does anyone know the length of the new metric bubble end brake line that replaces the rear (or both front and rear) stock brake line on the stock 77 930 during a brake upgrade?
