Porsche Crest Suggestions for treating/repairing rubber on a Carrera tail

Good morning all,

When I was polishing the car several weeks ago, I goofed and hit the rubber portion of the tail with my polisher. I had taped off the rubber portion of the tail, but the polishing pad managed to go pass the tape and under the tape line.

Well as you can see in the image below, it appears to have either left a very stubborn residue or has removed some of the dye. I was curious if anybody has also been as stupid and found a remedy.

I have tried removing it with some Isopropyl alcohol, to no avail.

Thanks guys!

Maybe try back to black or one of the other products that rejuvenates rubber. Good luck, Tim

Back to black is basically thinned out glycerin.

Apply Vaseline and then leave in the sun to warm it up - seems to soak in. I do this once or twice a year to keep it looking new.

I've always used 303 areospace on mine and it gets rid of any fading or wax marks

Vaseline's fine. It's really mild and won't hurt a polymer or vulcanized rubber. It does a number on natural latex/non-vulcanized rubber, but that wing's just plain not natural.
Compare the cost of a tub of Vaseline to any of the spray or wipe on products.

I've used Goof Off adhesive remover on soft rubber parts with excellent results. Cuts through crud to fresh layer of rubber. Not sure how it would work on harder tail rubber. If using, try on inconspicuous area first.

I used Vaseline on my 944 rear spoiler several years ago and the results were amazing. When the spoiler is cool, smear liberal amounts all over the rubber spoiler. Then put the car in the sun and let sit a couple of hours. In very short order, the Vaseline will be melted and boiling hot and you will see tiny bubbles as it soaks into the spoiler. After several hours wipe it dry. The spoiler will be soft and pliable for years and most of the dirt will wipe right off.

I have tried virtually all the suggestions I've seen in this thread for a spoiler lip, and none were a real long term solution. A couple of years ago I came across a product
ReNu Pro.
Don't know whats in it, but you have to use nitrile gloves to put it on and they say to throw out the gloves after. That said, it's fantastic in renewing the black color and lasts and lasts! It is a little pricey but what the hell, it's for a Porsche. A 4oz bottle will last you forever as you just use small dabs on the applicator pad. Best thing I have ever found! Read the Amazon reviews, plus Consumer Reports deemed it the best in a head to head with most all other products!

Uwanna, I've got a similar product I use called DeLux, that restores black rubber and plastic, but those are semi-permanent applications, and I'm worried that it might not blend in well, if it turns out to be a discoloration

As reported in Consumers Reports, ReNu pro has a black dye in it which should fix the bad spot you have. By the way it's excellent on all the rest of anything black plastic or rubber on the car. Best I've ever used!

ReNu Finish

Product details 1.75-ounce bottle, applicator pad, cloth, and gloves
Price: $20

ReNu Finish proved easy to apply and long lasting, with our treated panel still looking good after 10 weeks. Instructions call for a second pass to buff out excess product. Caution is advised: This product contains a black dye that can stain paint, clothing and hands, and instructions warn against inhaling vapors. Use with included gloves
.

Sounds like you have a ton of good suggestions already and the Vaseline is a totally new one on me. For what its worth - I did the same thing last year and got the wax over the tape line on my front smile and rear whale tail rubber and the Griots garage dried on wax remover worked for me followed by vinyl dressing - here's a link to the dried on wax remover: https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/dried-on+wax+remover+8+ounces.do

Maybe see if it is wax residue first? A little wax and grease remover on a rag?

Leatherique (yes, the leather seat coloring folks) offer a product - Leatherique Rubber Black Dye - that is designed exactly for this sort of work. It is very good stuff and the black does not rub off or fade. It's easy to use too - just wipe on with a damp rag or paper towel. You'll get a nice even black that's the perfect floss.

I can confirm that leather re-dye products work great. I repaired a rubber spoiler for my SL500 and it's been holding great and still looks great after one year. I even filled some holes with the vinyl repair compound then I used the black leather paint from ColorPlus, but I guess any brand will do. Here is the best shot I have of the rear that shows the spoiler.
