What compressor to buy Sanden 505, 507 or TR?
Playing around with options for compressor, there seems to be a preference for the Sanden SD507 compressor, but just wondering if anyone had tried the 505 or the new scroll compressors (the TR Series)?
I have fitted the 964 condenser in the front of my 6 speed 1989 (old style) Carrera and now want to match a compressor to it. Everything I read suggests that 911's condensers, even the 964's are too small, and from that folks seem to suggest that a relatively smaller compressor is the way to go. So I was thinking about the 505 (I am currently in Canada, moving to Europe), as the cooling requirements are not that high in those geographies, then I stumbled on the TR series which *seem* to be more efficient, lighter and so forth. Any thoughts? Oh yes, one more thing, I am putting in PMO ITB's, the shorter compressors are a good thing when I look at clearances which would favour the 505 and TR. Dennis |

Dennis, I've spent the last couple of weeks researching this. I can't give you a definitive technical argument for one over the other, but everything I read seemed to point to the 507 or 508. I chose the 508.
And, at the risk of public ostracism, I wanted to let you know that I've gotten great support from nostalgicac DOT com They seem knowledgeable and are very responsive. Sometime, on these boards, it seems impossible to reference A/C without bruising loyalties or evoking a back-story in the mists between rival factions. We have great A/C suppliers here who have made tremendous improvements to our cars and provide great service. Still, there are alternatives for those of us who are so fickle that we can't help but play DIY and concoct our own devices.

I got a 508 from Summit. Nice and shiny. However, I believe it was dimensionally longer than the smaller aizes which caused interference problems with the fuel rails when I went EFI. Moreover, I ground down that small shelf on the #4 intake manifold to fit.

I put a rebuilt compressor purchased on eBay for about $150.00. So far so good, search for AC Compressor For 1984-1989 Porsche 911 (1 Year Warranty) R33121

The shortness of the 505 coupled with my relatively light AC requirements makes it the favourite from my perspective, but the new scroll compressors seem to have some nice characteristics. Only downside I have seen so far with them is that they need a poly v belt and that'd mean a custom crankshaft pulley Thanks all Dennis |

Why not stay with an original Nippon Denso? Like carlvs said, they are readily available, and should bolt straight up to the factory brackets with no modification (obviously).
Griffiths even condones using the ND compressor over doing a compressor swap for 84 and later Carreras. Here |

The Denso compressor works just perfect, and looks right. With the 4 condensers of the Griffith's system, I have fantastic cold air in the hot summer. But it is your car, and your choice. I have no experience with the Sanden, or what it takes to adapt it to fit and function.

^^^^^ I bought this with great results. It is a direct replacement for our M/Y 86. Best, Gerry

Scroll's are supposedly more efficient and quieter than piston compressors. If you know of a scroll that fits a 911, would appreciate you posting link to that Dennis. I dug around for a while but came up with nothing.

I have no idea what the difficulty in making an adapter for this would be, but since I am likely going to have to do something custom anyway for the Sanden that will clear my throttle bodies, doing a scroll can't be that much harder...right?
https://www.sanden.com/scrollcompressors.html Anyway, here is the one I have been looking at.... Dennis |

Ivan or Gerry, Is the Denso compressor at the link rated for R134? I thought that the Denso replacement compressors were R12.

R-134
Quote:
was the transition from R-12 to R-134. On a 72f day, I can get 35f temps from the center duct while on the freeway. However, not recommended, as this invites evaporator freeze-up. The evaporator temp is (typically) 5f below the center duct temp. On our car, the on temp is 52f, off temp is 40f. Gerry
