87 carrera tail install

87 carrera tail installation on standard decklid.

so i have an no aero 87 and i am looking to install the oem carrera rear tail also taken from an 87. bought the rubber that goes between the decklid and the wing off of the pelican store. however, i don't see anything from a hardware pack perspective to secure said wing to the deck properly.

anyone know what the shopping list is or can point me to the right place? would also be great to have some install instructions even though it appears pretty plug and play on the surface.

thanks!

Download the PET for your car. Think of it like the parts catalog that is specific to your Porsche. It will give you detailed exploded assemblies of the different areas, including the tail. It will provide you with all the part numbers you need, as well as the hardware and quantity required.

Here is the link for your '87.

If you do this, you should do a write up! We'd love to have this for our articles for other enthusiasts looking to do this mod as well. Let me know if I can help you find parts for your install.

I second your getting a copy of the PET catalog - if only to help identify the nuts, bolts, washers and other hardware (missing in the figure from the link above).

I would also suggest getting a spare deck lid. Good news is it is sacrificial and you protect your original lid, bad news is you'd have to paint it.

You will also need to replace or modify your passenger side hinge arm with a "turbo" hinge, this is just the same hinge, but one with a small plate welded on which is used to attach a gas lid strut. I bought mine used.

I would just urge you to verify this list with the PET and your needs.
This is a jpg I took of a list that I made up while doing work on mine (used and retrofitted).

When I added the tail on my Targa - I was surprised at all the assorted HW required.

Thanks - i was fortunate in that the wing i bought has everything on it in mint condition save for the mounting bolts, washers and hinge. Most are missing screens, cross bars, grille, etc.

Thanks - i think i just need the 10 bolts, nuts and washers as well as the hinge hardware and extra strut for the weight. Rest of the wing is all in tact. Appreciate your help immensely.

You will need part#s 13 and 14 from this list. They are called "rails" or reinforcement plates
and are long thin plates with holes drilled in them and are mounted laterally on the underside of the lower decklid under the drilled holes and provide "stiffening" to the decklid and prevent the drilled holes from "Puckering" when tightening the bolts. Look closely at the PET pics and you will find them.

Sorry if this is hijacking the post but.....

I was re-installing my tail and purchased #12 in the diagrams. I could see 13 & 14 fits on each side of the engine lid center support but how does 12 fit. I tried to finagle it in but just can't get it in place. Any ideas or just slice it in half like 13 & 14?

I also was able to get the actual Porsche captive nuts on fleabay.

That is quite a parts list never thought that much was involved. Mine was poorly installed with just spring clips and sheetmetal screws with no renforcing bar(s).

Figure this was a way to sub to this install as well as I'll be re-trying the re-install

Blue Wing,
The #12 piece is used for the larger tail on an actual turbo. The bottom of the tail sits much lower on the rear of the decklid that has a much larger hole cut to accommodate the intercooler. Also the fiberglass part of the tail is a much larger piece than the Carrera one. I have a Turbo decklid on my narrow body '80SC and it has the #12 piece
If the bolt holes line up just cut the #12 rail in half.
