Latest video is up! I got the rear latch panel fully welded on, and came up with (what I think is...) an innovation as far as flaring the car!

Would love some input on the best methods to preserve door gaps. Is there a gap tool? spacers? Is it 3mm on a porsche?

I finally welded on the quarter panels on this 69 911 S. If I’m being honest… It was a bit terrifying. But, I made a jig to ensure the panels were in the correct location before I welded:

Here’s where I started, just for reference:

Literally no rear of the chassis. It all had to be rebuilt from scratch.

It’s funny… Years ago people would kill for a video documenting all of this, but it seems like on pelican people don’t have quite as much interest in video as they do the photos, which is a little baffling to me. That said, I’m going to keep posting and documenting it because I think it’s important.

I’ve enjoyed the videos that I’ve seen so far. Great job and what a unique undertaking. I need to get caught up on the more recent ones. This will be a great hot rod when done.

I know dude. It's a complete unicorn of a place. I have the paint for the other side of the floor, so that's on the list pretty soon.

I think it will! going to get the front end together next, then work on the engine.

rennch 06-25-2020 12:13 PM

Next Blasphemy Build project is to recreate the front end and make it “stock looking” while retaining all this trick air ducting. I’m on the hunt for a hood and some hinges.

What are those front radiators you’re using?

The ducts look good, pretty similar to the design I came up with for my 912, (which is based on the Porsche 996)

Those are actually the oil coolers that came with it. I have not sourced radiators yet. Definitely open to suggestions.

For my build, 76 912, I’m following the Colin Chapman philosophy of light and simple, so I’m going with a built (cams, STi crank and rods, ITBs) normally aspirated Subaru 2.5, at around 215 hp. This motor is actually lighter than the original VW Type4 that was in there.

Anyways, lighter, smaller motor let’s me run smaller radiators. I worked out the math, and came up with about 200 square inches of radiator frontal area is about the minimum.

So what I’m doing is I’m fitting a pair of Austin Mini radiators (106 square inches per side) under the headlights, and making a complete fiberglass ducts for them. These ducts will have a 12” fan on the back side, and exit into the low pressure area directly under the car. The ducts will basically form an expansion chamber on the front, that increases the static pressure of the incoming air stream. It’s based on the Porsche 996 design.

I spent a lot of time looking up radiator sizes, and the Mini rads fit about the best, all I really have to do is modify the end tanks and re-locate the water lines.

I estimating that this will just about enough, and as a plan-b, there’s more room on the right, so could take a Chevy impala radiator, saw it in half, weld up the end tanks and that will give another 60 square inches.

I’m using a modified 964 bumper (I like the cleaner rounder lines if it), and this forms the front part of the ducts.

I need to put together a video of the design.

If I were doing a 912, I would do the exact same thing. The Subaru motor I am putting in is also a flat six, lighter than an SC motor, considerably more stock horsepower at 240, and costs $1200.As a bonus, it was Co-designed by Porsche as evidenced by the German part numbers when you tear it apart.

Are you doing iWire?

Andy Somogyi 06-25-2020 10:46 PM

Yes, it’s amazing how similar the Subaru (EJ, EG and EZ are to the Mezger engine. Certain parts even interchange.

Sounds like you’re going with an EZ — that’s a great engine, with the right ECU just loves to rev. I’ve seen one running with Triumph motorcycle ITBs and sounded amazing.

I’ll be using a Speeduino ECU with my own harness. I’m using an extra daughter board for extra analog outputs to drive all my OEM gauges. It’s pretty simple to write Speeduino modules.

Please don’t stop updating this. I think a lot of us are interested but just don’t speak up.
On the other hand, I’m not into YouTube or videos much. I’m old school and prefer pics.
But don’t let that influence you. Most of us will use YouTube in our life when we need instruction on certain things.
I’m curious to see it when it’s finished. Keep up the good work and thanks for bringing it here for us to enjoy.
Good luck

That's helpful, thank you. It's more difficult to maintain a detailed build thread when video tells the story so well. I wish the Pelican forum had better video integration...as it is, it's a little antequated. I'd love to be able to upload native video files, but it's not set up that way at the moment.

I'll try to do a better job documenting the install by taking pics with my phone as well as shooting video with the Canon.

I guess I just find the different projects more stimulating and interesting than what I have done or am doing. I prefer the format of a forum and pictures for discussing and learning stuff in detail. I have to say that I am of two minds when it comes to youtube. I watch quite a bit of videos. Mostly music or entertainment stuff.

On the other hand, I don't enjoy and avoid informational or instructional videos. Not that those don't have value, but I usually hit the fast forward to get the info I'm after. Sorry, I am old school that way. I don't watch TV news either.

For example your posts #67 and 93 are great AFAIK. JMHO.

I do want to follow your build, as I find it interesting.

I started working on attempting to modify the racing front end back to a semi-stock looking form, so I could fit a front bumper and a stock hood with a hood latch:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N2FloQD5JUc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Saw your vid on YouTube.

The air intake is nice, keep it. What I suggest is have the center air inlet route air into the front fenders. Mount a pair of radiators in the fenders, similar to Pete WEVO build. The front part of the fenders gets sealed off, connected to the center intake and the rads. This front part forms a perfect expansion chamber. By Bernoulli’s law, the high velocity incoming air enters the expansion chamber, slows down and increases static pressure. It’s this static pressure that actually creates the force to drive the air through the radiators.

The way you have this routed would force a major rerouting of the existing engineering. I'm trying my best not to do that.

Not really, you're almost there. You keep the center duct, that's great, and those ducts right now exit into the front part of the fenders, under the headlights. That's really good, because where the ducts dump into the front fenders is pretty close to an ideal ducted radiator design.

Basically, all you have left to do, is get some sheet metal, cut them to the vertical shape of the inside the fenders, cut an exit hole in them, and mount the radiators to them. All you really have to do is get some foam so these sheet metal parts fit snugly under the fender.

You're closer to mounting the rads than I am, because in my case, I need to make molded fiberglass ducts to route air to the rads, and duct the exhaust down, under the wheels. Because you've got the center duct, that's about 3/4 of the work right there.

If you look at Pete's build right here, he's running a pair of custom 16x9 radiators, that's 144" per side, or total of 288 inches or area, and he's proven that area works, even with less than ideal ducting.

That’s what I thought as well… But there is zero evidence of any dent. Besides… You can access it from the underside. No need for a dent puller.
