Enjoy the journey on which you have embarked. I'm certain that you will enjoy the car a lot once it's on the road with you behind the wheel.

Damn, that "gas" looks nasty.

Started the spread sheet yet:)

It amazes me that there are still cars just sitting in a garage for years out there still.... oh wait... I guess my car is one of those. DOH!!

My current car, a '78 with mostly '83 parts, was born in Mocha (VERY dark brown) and then repainted in Mocha. It had lots of chips which showed a whitish undercoat. It never seemed to me that Porsche would paint a dark color over a white undercoat. Every Porsche seems to have been sprayed with a more 'interesting' undercoat. I see grey. I see brown. Also, I notice that original Porsche paint jobs are of very high quality. They chip FAR less than repaints. I don't know much about paints, but a body/paint guy could tell you more about this car, when you get to that point. And BTW, my excellent local guy got rid of those chips and missing paint pieces almost as if they had not been there.

This looks like a good car. Keep us posted.

Thank you! It’s definitely in great condition. I’m going to keep everyone updated with every step I take and how I do it! It seems everybody agrees with keeping the rock chips, I’m sure I’ll be adding more.

That was probably the worst gas I have ever seen, we refilled it 2 more times and it still kept coming out yellowish. I will most likely have to replace the tank but it will be fine for now. My main goal is to get it back on the road before the cold season hits Chicago. I already have my pelican parts shopping list!

You have some work ahead of you bringing it back, but well worth the effort.

Thank you! The seats did not originally look like that, those pictures were after a quick wipe and dry with some water. I plan on using some antibacterial spray and water too clean them again soon. When I bought the car, the interior was completely covered in Mildew. But it cleaned up nice :)

Super cool find.
I have friends in Westmont and Hinsdale. Nice area to be.

I agree 100% with Superman. More pics as you uncover the car from all that dirt!

I also like the two-tone interior. It's pretty sweet without being over the top.

Yes it definitely is a nice area! The man who owned the car was a doctor, he was the second owner after buying it used in 1985! Making me the third happy owner. Here’s a pic of that beautiful tea tray!

Mike, mine has the same color carpets as yours but has 2 tone light/dark brown door panels and seat covers. They are clearly newer than the car.

Upon receiving the Porsche birth certificate I found that the original interior color was Grey Beige, so the carpet color was correct.

Very interesting. I’ll have to order a birth certificate for mine and see!

Haha, there are definitely plenty of rare cars out there waiting to be found! Keep an eye out for your dream car! Mine wasn’t far from home.

It looks great mate,

Like some of the others have said, leave all the chips etc, just get it on the road and enjoy the hell out of it.

Leatherioque or similar would be good on the seats. LRP PRODUCTS | Leatherique Restoration Products

Cheers

I’ve been looking for something to treat the leather that is not going to leave an oily residue behind, I’ll definitely try that out!

Put a mixture of MMO & ATF into the cylinders last night to soak. Spark plugs looked good as well. As my miracle mixture frees up the engine, I worked on getting fuel to it. After draining the tank I replaced the fuel pump, a couple cracked/leaking fuel lines, and the fuel filter. This picture is from when we were testing the fuel pump. Disclaimer: Before anyone complains, we had a jack stand for support under the car that you can’t see in the picture.

Here is a picture of one of the troublesome rubber fuel lines. As you can see, Porsche uses one-time crimp fittings that are impossible to remove. The rubber line coming from the left is from the pump, after the crimp it goes to the right and straight to the tunnel and is near impossible to access. I had one shot to cut the crimp in the right spot. I used an electric cutting wheel on low speed and took my time, I was able to pry away the last part with a screwdriver. I replaced the Porsche crimp with a non-slotted hose clamp.

What the quickest way to empty out an entire service department? Start an old Porsche that’s been sitting for 20+ years!

Superman 09-06-2019 04:52 PM

Thanks, 'Mike.' Keep us posted. I don't think we've seen an engine pic yet, as I recall. Your headlights are "Euro" H-4s.

timmy2 09-06-2019 06:50 PM

That photo brings me back.... :)
Congrats on getting it running.

chrisbalich 09-09-2019 04:14 AM

Oh, man am I looking forward to my first start.
Congrats on the momentous achievement!

I'll be in the City this weekend (Riot Fest), but CheckedItOut is this weekend as well. You should check it out. ;)

I will be there as well! I wanted to bring my SC but I don’t think it will be ready and I’m pretty sure I missed registration deadline. It should be an amazing event I can’t wait!

It was such a fun drive! My first in a 911 of any year! I figured out some more problems I have to take care of as well. The main one being flat spots in my tires from sitting so long. Also my steering column has tons of play, But still a very fun ride!

Here’s an engine pic when it was fresh out of the garage! Also, I didn’t even realize I had H-4’s. Definitely an upgrade from sugar scoops that use to come on these. I wonder how long they’ve been on there. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e557660b11.jpg

That picture is hilarious!

maxnine11 09-09-2019 11:42 AM

Nice resurrection!

The seeds visible at the bottom left corner of the engine photo above suggest a mouse may have homesteaded in the engine compartment for a while.
It would be advised to check for mouse nests under the fan shroud. Potential for overheating or fire.

Haven’t had a chance to wash it yet, to be honest the dusty look has grown on me. I’m gong to be sad when the time comes.

Also, I have had a love hate relationship with white tailpipe smoke the last couple of days. As you can see from the picture of the first start it smoked a lot, we figured it was MMO/ATF in the cylinders and we left it running outside. We left it run maybe 30 minutes. After it was up to temperature it was still smoking a ton, I shut it off for the night.

Now I figured a couple of things. maybe a ring was seized and not sealing or maybe my valve guides were worn. I was worrying about it all night.

I came to the shop the next morning and started it up expecting a huge cloud of smoke. But, to my surprise it started up quickly and without even a puff of white. I didn’t understand how. So I figured I’d change the oil that’s been in there since 1994, I left it running for 20 minutes and around that time it started smoking again! Not as bad as the first start but enough to where I couldn’t leave it in my shop.

I decide to bring it inside and change the oil, 20w-50 Dino juice. Replaced filter as well. I got and start it up again, no smoke! So I pull it outside and within 20 minutes it’s smoking again. This time I take it for a spirited drive, smoke and all! I get back and it seems to have helped a little as it’s smoking less now.

It’s a weird phenomenon and I can’t pinpoint why it’s smoking when at operating temperate. I came to the conclusion that oil is in my exhaust system. Maybe it had leaked past the valves and piled up in there since it sat for 20 years. Well I hope that’s it. If it was an engine problem it would be smoking on start up as well, Wouldn’t it?

Worst comes to worst I’ll have to replace the exhaust system, oil may be built up in the catalytic converter.

Anyone ever experienced a similar situation before?

What you have there is, as I think someone suggested, a time capsule. That appears to be a bone stock '83, the best of the SCs. Except for the H4s. I wouldn't be surprised if it lacks a popoff valve which I would recommend. Cheap part, not a difficult install. It protects the big black air box atop the engine from breaking if (when) there is an intake explosion. They happen. Lots of upgrade suggestions I could make but I do think you should clean her up. Dust scratches paint, for example. Clean cars are MUCH easier to work on. And you'll be smitten with her overall beauty. That said, it's your car and you seen to be enjoying it. Which is the point. ;)

Dragons sometimes smoke while they are waking up. If the car runs fine, I might be tempted to drive it more and see if the smoke stops. While your '83 is the best of SCs, it also has the most complex fuel system. I would monitor the spark plugs carefully however. An injector could be spewing too much gas.

I'm just rambling I guess. You are doing fine. Nice, methodical approach. Congrats. You have a nice G-body 911.

icarp 09-09-2019 05:44 PM

yep on the oil burn , the thermostats are not opening at the right temps . the engine thermo is the problem one , at least it was on my car , I still replaced both . nice project!have fun

Speed metal 09-09-2019 07:37 PM

Maybe a buttload of oil in the heat exchangers that's roasting off after she gets warm? No super gassy noxious stink? Id drive it a good hour and see if you can burn it off :)
Cool car man!

Kraftwerk 09-09-2019 08:19 PM

Intermittent smoke issue could be a lot of things I don't know enough about if it is just coming out of the tail-pipe. If it is smoke from around the engine area: I would order oil return tubes from our host, I suspect those gaskets maybe cracked and there is oil leaking onto the heat-exchanger, adding to the a smoke problem.

Carry a nice sized fire extinguisher or two on your enjoyable 'Italian tune-ups'.

An '83 SC is a good find! I find one in my garage every time I go there.

Thank you! This is my first 911 and it’s everything I wanted which was something all original! Now that someone had mentioned the H4’s, I think I prefer them on my car. I like the look over the US Spec lights. I have already checked for a pop-off valve, there is none. I’ve heard as long as you have a well tuned engine there is no need for one. I’m about to give her a quick wash before I do my pads and rotors.

Also, I suspect that the smoke is just oil in the heat exchanger, Or at least I hope LOL

Cool car man!

It drives good, has an even powerband and gets up to 60mph quickly. I also have a feeling it’s oil in the heat exchangers. But we will see soon enough.

I will definitely look into the thermostats, that can also definitely be the cause. I will keep everyone updated once I figure it out!

Thank you for the advice! I already do have a mini fire extinguisher just in case. I’ll look into the oil return tubes, there is oil seepage from the bottom of my pan. It isn’t much so I am not to worried about it. Eventually I’ll end up dropping the engine for a proper clean up!
