setting up a ring & pinion in a 930.
I have this job in my "To do" list, I have done tens of GM/Ford rear ends in the past and have all the needed tools for it but I wonder how different a 930 is? what involves setting up the pinion depth? does it involve completely disassemble the whole trans to set up the pinion depth?, I need to have a faith that I can do it myself before I end up with an explosion of gears and parts all over the bench.

Hi kamaro
do you know which CWP you have , as there are 2 pinion depths, and you may need to strip the box down to adjust the pinion depth, to fit/change the clamp plate shims, you will need a selection of diff shims also for the diff bearing pre load and back lash

Much like the GM rear ends, starting with the shims that came stock with the case is usually a very good bet.

I have no exact info as I just purchased a 4 speed shortened 930 trans that came with a diff from an earlier 930 trans, so to set them up right I need to re-adjust the backlash and pinion depth to match them up. Is there any special tools that I need to have before hand?

You'll need to check and probably re-set the differential bearing preloads and the ring gear backlash. Are you sure the replacement differential is compatible with this transmission? You should review the differential & final drive section of the factory 930/ Turbo Carrera workshop manual, to give yourself a better idea of what's involved.

Also, the really early diffs have little nubbins where the axle flanges bolt in. They require flanges with a corresponding pocket to work with it. You’ll want to look closely at what you have to work with and make sure it will work. A flat end 930 flange will not.

HI kamaro
check the Crown wheel matching No' on the side of the CW, there is a MATCHING No' on the end of the pinion, or should be, you will also find the back lash reading on there, if the case and shaft have been shortened, the box will have been stripped and from the amount of gearboxs I see, I would check the pinion depth or get it checked, + if you do not know who has put it back together the selectors may need adjusting, and check things are fitted the correct way round on the shafts if you need any info let me know
