Blue Sky -- Beautiful shot of the Duck. I used to have a monster 750 Dark. Tell me that's not your garage though. If it is, I'm going to have to steal it. Carpeting?!?!?!?!?

thrown_hammer 03-31-2003 02:35 AM

Adam,
You caught me! Actually I discovered some bigger problems this weekend that require attn. I will post that dilema in another thread.
The wife isn't down with the flat black idea yet. She'll come around...

thrown_hammer 04-11-2003 08:29 AM

Here is my feeble attempt at a Satin blak 911. ;)

I dig it. Anyone else?

thrown_hammer 04-11-2003 10:19 AM

John Deere "Blitz Black" is UV stable and $27.00 a gallon... Sounds like a plan.

RickM 04-11-2003 10:29 AM

Shawn, A few more angles and it will look like a stealth fighter.

thrown_hammer 04-11-2003 10:36 AM

Yeah, maybe I should paint a Triumph TR8 that color...

Eric Mckenna 04-11-2003 10:36 AM

Shawn,
Yes DO IT!
It will look killer good man... very mean...

Do it .. make it YOURS!!!! .. do do like everyone else, make it to where when people see that damn car they KNOW ..thats SHAWN's Car!!!

Eric

I think this fall I will do it. I will collect some more rubber seals and stuff over the summer. I think it will look WICKED BAD with gloss black Carrera scripts over the Satin Black.

Here is the primer 930 that was in the Excellence article.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/primer930.jpg

I like it.

Tom

thrown_hammer 04-11-2003 11:27 AM

I would like mine to be a little less rough around the edges but that is the general idea. What issue of Excellence was that? I may have to find that article.

Oh, I wish that were mine...and the "garage", too. No, it's a Tucson, AZ dealership. :(

The (relatively) new Honda 919 also comes in flat black (probably a "me-too" response to the Duck's market success):

Totally badass. I think I may do this to my 911 eventually, too. After all, the Targa bar is already flat black...

According to the Excellence article, the guy with the primer 930 had a hard time figuring out how to clean and treat the surface. He tried all kinds of waxes and treatments, before settling on a plastic scour pad. I like the concept, but seems like a satin clear-coat would be worth considering.

johncj8989 04-11-2003 02:03 PM

I say do it Hammer. I think it will look great

lateapex911 04-11-2003 09:41 PM

Get a bunch of satin or flat paints ahead of time as the whole weathering problem will be the undoing of it. Test, test and test! Find some scrap parts and start spraying.

I would suggest tha gloss highlight such as you are proposing will be key, or it will end up looking like a 69 Camaro that never got finished!

Tone on tone is cool.

Another concept would be doing the body in black metallic/pearl, and the lettering in gloss. Or vice versa! try it all!

Spray some samples and post shots here!

thrown_hammer 04-14-2003 03:40 AM

Jake,
The John Deere Blitz Black that the streetrod guys use is UV stable and will not fade. It dries as a Satin finish. I don't want it to look like the car in the Excellence article. That car looks a little too ratty for me. I want mine to look finished. Just mean...

Zendalar 04-14-2003 05:17 AM

I once saw this article (on television) where they coated a Porsche with this stealth material, they tested it and rode by a microwave radar and it did not show a thing. get some of that stuff :)

adamred 04-14-2003 06:02 AM

Is that 930 the Christian Garibaldi car? If so I've been up close and personal and can tell you that it doesn't look at all good. Primer is falling off, chipping, just looks like a half done car....he used to work at ******** here in NJ

Eric Mckenna 10-13-2003 07:38 AM

do you guys remember the old i wanna say mid 80's maybe 86 model year RUF turbo he used as a TEST BED for his motor mod's..
it was olive drab.. he called it the NATO!
it was sweet as hell!

Eric

Early_S_Man 10-13-2003 07:59 AM

Eric,

I remember the Ruf 'NATO' flat polyurethane Olive Drab test bed ... it was featured in a special issue of Road & Track! Wasn't it sans the tail, too?

Eric Mckenna 10-13-2003 08:58 AM

Warren,
I have never seen the R&T article on the NATO.
I know I had read about it in old Euro SPorts car mag back some time ago.
All I remeber is that it was one BAD looking machine! that could for sure back up the look.
I remeber the article talking about Alois and the Writer running it down the Autobahn and hitting a bird, they said it was just a grease spot at the 180+ they had been going whern they hit it. I wish I could find that old Mag..
but I am sure it's long gone...
haha!
Eric
