87 Throttle Return Spring

Hi all, need some assistance in confirming these are the correct parts? I believe my springs are a bit weak. Not sure why they list 2 for the yellows? I couldn't find the other one?

I believe the yellow arrow is

green arrow is

Thanks all!

On an 87, there are two throttle springs on the underside. The second one is only accessed with the motor out and then with long needle nose pliers.k
The short green one is correct. If you want one slightly shorter I would order the SC spring.

Thanks for the responses.

The reason I suspect they are not doing their job is that I took the shorter one off and compressed it a bit and cleaned the other spring built into the housing by the green one and my symptom disappeared for awhile.

When the car is warmed up and you go to shift it will sometimes continue to idle up a few hundred RPM’s until you engage the next gear or release the clutch. Bit hard to explain. On the throttle then off the throttle, engage clutch, engine revs up, shift next gear, release clutch engine rpms go back to normal. Does it in all gears and any speed.

i would check your throttle linkage plate bushings on top of the engine. Also rich fuel mix would do that to.Check it the throttle is closed when you let go...With engine off use hand and push the throttle and listen for a click from your idle control micro switch
here is some reading
3.2 Carrera throttle body stop adjustment

Very helpful link. I made sure I am making the proper contact with the micro switch and I can here it click when pressed and unpressed.

Now, the throttle linkage plate bushings is an interesting idea. From what I can see there is a rod that goes thru the bushings. Mine appears to have some surface rust on it, and the bushing doesn't look all that good. I might be over compensating for the bushing getting ever so slightly stuck or the rod getting hung up with a stronger spring. I went ahead and ordered a set of springs (30 bucks, why not )

Off to see what I can find out about replacing the linkage bushings. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, and hopefully I can come up with a solution.

Jamesrg,
Beyond what proporsche suggested you might also check, if you have cruise control, the cruise throttle cable connector to the throttle linkage. The tabs on mine broke and on occasion the throttle would appear to stick for a second. Not figuring out the issue I had a scary occurrence of the throttle cable sticking at full throttle as the connector gets stuck. If you do a search you’ll see references to zip ties to secure it as the cable is no longer available.

Just another items to inspect and confirm.

Thanks, cruise control is long gone. Although might have been nice over the last few days after clocking 1757 miles at the PCA Palooza

Jamesrg,
I’m jealous, we went last year and unfortunately this year wasn’t able to make it. My Carrera is getting some alternator bearings and cv boots right now.

Good luck on your issue.

Also check where the the throttle rod off the trans passes up through the engine tin slot to the throttle linkage base,

Mine was bent slightly barley rubbing on the slot opening.... just enough to sometimes prevent the throttle to return 100% to the off (idle) position.

Would “hang” or stick at about 1400 RPM until I would blip the accelerator... to get it to release back to normal. Use to drive me crazy at red lights or stop signs.

When I dropped the motor replace the clutch...changed all the throttle springs & bushings etc. very easy to do with motor out.
