What is this small light used for?

I was replacing my floor carpeting today and I found this small light under the carpet between the parking brake lever and the shifter, what is this light used for? is it even a factory installed item?

Light.

I think it is a light for your heater levers.

No, 'defrost' refers to sending hot air to the upper registers to defrost the windshield and door glass.

right! it's reminding that you need to lift the levers (and do the following with your dashboard "climate control" levers -- turn off the outside vent air and move the red lever to the up arrow) to activate defrost

It must have been required by some sort of regulation

The actual markings for the illuminated cover are pretty unique (Part #914-632-107-00).
It's very Doug DeMuro, "quirks and features"...

It is a the exact same part used in the 914.

I bought my 914 new back in 1974. Before I sold it, I swapped that cover for the identical one in my 911. So I have had that one part in my car since 1974.

It is just a light to let you know how to adjust the heat. 100% useless once you know how to operate the heaters. The government required it to be added way back then.

does anyone else think thats backwards ??? what am i missing ? you pull up on the levers to route the hot air in from the exchangers .. how does pushing levers down blocking the heating from getting into the cabin help defrosting ??

Think 'back and forth' instead of up and down.
pull the levers back (up) for heat.

Comes on when the defrost is engaged. As simple to use as the rest of the climate control on an earlish 911.

I don't think that is correct. At least in my '88, it is part of the dash lights, comes on whenever you turn on the car's lights. It's just to remind you how/when to operate the heater levers. Doesn't turn off if you turn off the heat (push down the levers).

You may be right. The light was finicacy on the 73. Was definitely not always on with the head lights. Not to say it was not supposed to be. Thought it was some combination of top lever right, middle lever left, bottom lever right, hand throttle location lever up, defrost knob out... Like the enigma. 9 zillion combos to get the defrost on

That light is fed by an un-fused circuit so be careful just leaving it buried under the carpet
