Considering building 3 piece wheels

I have been looking for wheels for awhile for my 82 911 with turbo fenders. It currently has spacers and its time for them to go. So I can find what I want so looking at sourcing parts and assembling them. My question is has anyone been able to source all the parts at a reasonable price or would it have been better to just buy new. I have tons of experience in wheels.

I've built and refurbished a lot of 3-piece wheels. Unless you get a good deal on used parts it's definitely cheaper to buy a complete set of wheels. Rims alone start at about $150 each, centers are more, the hardware is usually special, and everything has to play nice together.

there are a few peeps on here that collect sell, and covet 3 pce wheel parts on here... but cory is right... ( and i can attest via experience) getting all the dimensions proper is quite a task...
better in long run to buy a set, that is already confirmed to suit your exact application /car
just my 2 cents... i spent years playing the bbs inner outer game then just said fockit ...

Are you wanting Fuchs centers? What tire size? The way the technology has advanced in recent years there are cheaper options than three piece. And you wont have to worry about a 40 year old wheel as a donor.

BTW, I have some BBS 16" halves hanging on the wall that I probably will never use.

Also, the last time I checked BBS bolts were $7 each.

Thanks for the offer I would like to go to 17s the 18s are a really harsh ride with a sport suspension I have thought about Lindsey wheels but they no longer offer polished barrels Kevin

It really comes down to how much you want to spend.

I have some friends who broke the bank at $800 for a set of fake BBS another set that would eat Ramen noodles for a few months to buy $5,000 wheels.

The good news, is that there is a wide interest in saving and building 2-3 piece wheels so barrels, lips and hardware are readily available.

I just built a nice set of 17" BBS wheels for my 1986 635CSi and it was cheaper for me to buy the fasteners out of England than in the US (go figure!).

Great looking car still not sure Fuchs will look right with my 964 bumper update but still would like polished barrels and pedals

Not sure I want to spend 5k but somewhere under would be ok. The wheels I have now are ok just really want to get the spacers off

.
.
We use Bogart Wheels here in Phoenix for custom wheel 3 piece 17" barrels/rims . . .

If you call and explain what you want to do they can answer your questions and
fabricate barrels to match your current centers and change the offset to remove the
spacers . . . OR - they could make the complete wheel for you . . .

They build wheels for a lot of NorCal Porsche racers and custom wheels of all kinds to
the LA area . . . they have been in business for a very long time . . . (no affiliation -
just satisfied customer)

Regards,
Roy T

That's good to know about Bogart! I'll save that for the future.

my SC/930 conversion project came with 3 sets of BBS 3 piece motorsports 16" wheels. 8/9/11".

suspected I would never get to use them but recently saw some threads about tires and found Pirelli, michellin and avon still sell wide 16" tires.

so now thinking I'll separate and restore a set of them. what I am wondering is if this is something I can do? or do you need to be able to verify they are 'true and balanced' after reassembling?

No worries - - disassemble, clean, paint, powder coat, polish, etc., - - maybe check for true before taking apart . . . shouldn't have to balance after . . .

There is a company in Canada named Augment Wheels, they build custom wheels whatever design you want with not all the money in the world for a set (not cheapest though).
But since we love Porsches - there you go:
https://www.augmentwheels.com/pages/porsche-inspired
They sell parts as well.
