Getting to first gear dogteeth...
So, I blew every tooth off of first gear. I rebuilt the transmission 2 years ago, those were new teeth!
![]() It appears that I can keep the two shafts in place (I have the CMS one piece retainer), even leave them mounted on the differential housing, and just slide 1st gear off the pinion shaft? I don't have to disassemble anything else? If that works, I can forgo the holding jig, all of the slider fork alignment, etc. Thanks!

Since I see a 1980 listed in your signature you likely have a 915 transmission.
The 901 (early) transmission can change first gear without disassembling the stack. In your 915 you will have to separate the gear stack from the case and then address your issues with first gear. You should also be hoping that you didn't tear up everything in the box as hardened gear teeth were working their way through a spinning transmission gear stack. Inspect them all carefully. I am not sure I want to know how you sheared teeth on a 1st gear in a 915.

Never tried it, but perhaps worth a try! However, Jamie makes an important point: with the dog teeth or gear teeth sheared, it is really in your interest to tear *everything* down and be fastidious in cleaning out debris. LSDs in particular have a strange but consistent ability to suck in debris, gouge clutch discs etc. Good luck,

I was trying to visualize the stack while I sat here at work, I thought that first would come off the top of the pinion shaft, I guess I need to look at it closer tonight. Downshifting at a freeway exit, 4-3-2, when some jerk cut me off on the exit itself. I was startled, and without thinking dropped it into first about 35mph. Instantly tore them apart. Fortunately I got it in neutral with the clutch in quickly, so the geartrain stopped spinning, and ended up on the side of the road with the engine off. Took a few minutes of slowly working the shifter around until all of the teeth fell to the bottom the housing, and I was able to drive the 40 miles home at freeway speed using 2-3-4. On first inspection there was no obvious damage, except for all of the spare teeth laying around.

If I remember correctly, 1st gear is part of the shaft so to replace that, everything on the shaft has to come off. It is a matched set so replacement of one side means the other side has to go too.
I too would recommend disassemble and inspecting everything. There is no point in doing all of this work and have a bearing making noise and then having to tear it all back down again. Wait for JW to come on and he can tell you how he replaced syncros on 1 and 2 gears without tearing the whole thing out. But, that is synchros, not gears.

Yes. Just remove the roller bearing in front of 1st gear and it slides right off. Don't even have to take the trans off the engine.

Lucky the syncro and it's internal bits stayed in place.

Seen them badly blunted but never with teeth ripped off. Suppose it could happen.

![]() As John W.mentioned ,too have never seen so many clean cuts on 1st gear dog teeth? The question is who did supply it to you or who made them ? maybe material problem? Ivan

Is it possible to call those dogs defective?

They were R&S dogteeth, purchased around December 2017. I'm trying to find my records to see where they came from (Here, EBS, Amazon, dunno).
I wondered the same thing about possible defective teeth, but it's always easier to blame someone else over blaming myself for a stupid shift, even if it was 100% an accident.

Am with Pmax... thrilled it was those teeth rather than your case bombing. .

Just think of those missing dog teeth as being possibly cheaper than a 4-1 mechanical overrev of the engine.

Dude. That’s metal! I blew a few once on an auto-x downshift. That’s just crazy that the whole thing went. Did the rear lock up at all?
