Aloha,
I would like to know what the average cost(s) are for the various 911 engines out there. I'm asking this in reference to fitting a 911 into a 356 Speedster replica (I suppose for this application a 2.0L would be fine). I'm just doing research right now, you know, seeing which dream is too expensive. So, are there many engine builders out there who will build a crate 911 engine? Or, do you have to have a 911 engine for them to rebuild in the first place? And, of course, cost... mahalos, Joel |

You are probably looking at at least a couple grand for a used engine such as a 2.0 or a 2.2 and at least 4 for a used 3 liter. That would be used. Then there is the transmission/clutch/mounts/exhaust/fuel etc.
Check the previous posts, the cheapest builder (initials MM) has had a sketchy history of quality but there are some quality builders out there. Recently I read an article about a guy in the States who builds four cylinder 911 engines..... It sounds like the perfect type of engine for a 356/912 or a custom Type 1 VW. He takes an old 3 litre engine (I think), splits it, removes the middle bank of cylinders, twin plugs it rebuilds it to an extremely high quality. The engine tested in the article I read was a flat four two litre motor, with a high compression etc.... and put out about 215bhp !!! On top of that - apparently it sounds gorgeous !! The motor tested had done almost 60,000 miles without a hitch, so reliability doesn't seem to be a problem. This custom built engine may be out of your budget, but if I had the ££££ and was looking for a lightweight and powerful Porsche motor for my modified 356, then I would check this guy out. All I remember is that he has a Greek sounding name.... if you want me to dig out his details then just shout.

John - thanks for the links. I'll check them out. As for price, well...I have this deal with myself, that when I finish my education (or get a good deal through it) I am going to buy myself my dream car (probably the last car I'll be able to afford). So, I wouldn't want to cut any corners...but I don't want to be eating canned soup my whole life either. Deeks - if you could dig up that info., that would be great. I think I heard about this somewhere else once before. However, I thought the guy was mistaken, and that he was actually talking about a 912 engine. Sounds like interesting stuff! A 911-4 engine. I guess my only question is - why? Its the same size, and pretty much the same complexity. What does loosing the middle two cylinders do for you?

THe twin plugged 4 bangers that Gary puts in customer's cars? Top of the line up will set you back $30K...the rich are different...they can afford more expensive toys.

You know, for the cost of one of those speedster replicas, you could buy a nice 356 convertable D and have the real thing. This is a car that will hold its value forever, later on you could build a hot flat four if you want more juice. To see what a nice one looks like, go to www.foreigncoachworks.com.

I suppose the reason why I'm interested in the Speedster replicas, is that I won't feel bad about doing it my way. The impression I get from the 356 community, is you put it back to stock or make a race car for SCCA competition. Well, I'd like to make a car that's a little of both and drive it on the street. I'd feel horrible about chopping up a nice, clean 356 to turn it into what I want. The Speedster replicas...they're not the real deal, so I wouldn't feel that bad. Is Gary Emory the one who does the 911/4 engines? If so, that's completely out of my league. I've seen his cars in the flesh. Nice stuff.
