Gkn axle questions on new axles i just got in.
So i am putting new axles in this weekend and i just got the new one in today, they look different, but carry The same part number. Is something way off here or are they just using different, but compatible caps? Also it came without any bolts even though i have read that they are supposed to? Just reuse the old ones?

That end cap is not familiar to me. If it binds on the inner part of flange I do think you can gently tap the end caps off and exchange.

Fine to use the old bolts if they are the correct ones and in good shape. Torque to spec, going around twice.

The end cap on the left does not look familiar to me either. Hard to say whether it will fit inside the flange or not from the photo... if not, maybe you could simply pop it off and put one of the end caps from your old CVs on in its stead.
I also reuse CV bolts as long as they are in good shape. I do try to degrease them and the flanges before reassembly as best as I can. I use a paint pen to mark them after torquing so a quick visual check is easy in the future.

That looks like the same end cap on the axle I just swapped in on my car. It fit up just fine. Mine did not come with bolts either. I cleaned up the old ones and swapped in new ones where necessary.

Well that odd cap was a no go... had to swap it with one of the original ones. Not the end of the world. Axles are in. New tires going on tomorrow! Man the original axles are so sloppy feeling compared to the new ones!

I’ve never seen covers that would be used except on the 85 and later halfshafts with the unitized stub axel
The covers are just for retaining the grease. There are paper gaskets that go in place between the CV and the axel. Bruce |

Thinking the caps are just to keep the grease in when shipping?
