Rear Outer CV - What's wrong?

Any guesses as to what's wrong? I've never had a 911 axle out. It's from my 89 3.2 Carrera.

Here's the left rear outer CV... Note the shine! Also, the inner clamp is loose.

Compared to what I suspect is "fine" - the right:

Any diagnosis/advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

No rubber boot.....you need a boot and if it has been like that awhile probably a new axle unit...

I suspect that if you thoroughly inspect that left boot you will find a tear at the outer fold.

Probably a good time to service the axles and replace all four boots

Edit, just noticed the joint body itself is shiny and these are the later non serviceable outer CV s. Is there any play if you try to shake the wheel? Wonder if the wheel bearing had gone bad allowing the joint to rub on the trailing arm?

The brake adjuster housing is rubbing the cv joint and also the rubber boot.
The groove in the trailing arm, the housing sits in is now too big letting the adjuster housing
rub the cv joint. I use a zip tie to keep it off the joint. No problem now. good luck, John.

Looking at the first picture, shouldn't the small end of the boot be retained about 1 inch further inboard on the small raised section of the drive shaft?

Looks to me that the small end of the boot has slid outboard causing the big end of the boot to bunch up, thus increasing the outside diameter causing it to rub on the surrounding components.

Just a thought

Blair
