AC Question

I have been chasing a leak in my AC system and found it on the side of the compressor where the charge fittings bolt in. My question is when I disconnected the lines to remove the plate the lines did not have O rings on them, aren't these lines supposed to have o rings?

Yes, there should be an O-ring there. And it takes very little torque to seal it. It is a large nut and very easy to over tighten.

If you tighten it much at all, it will crush and cause this. I fought that leak once before.

Thanks. There is a new line on the low side put on prior to my ownership. I can't believe someone would install a new line and not put an o ring on it.

Agree But the PO had all work done by "professionals" you would think an experienced pcar mechanic would remember to put the o-rings on.

Oh. Suddenly, all P Car mechanics are not human? Hmmm.. Interesting observation.

I guess the past 3 P Car Dealerships that serviced my various P car rides
are filled with humans then. Cause none of them have been perfect.

And, the past few P car Techs, each had over 30+ years of experience,
who messed up things, are human too.

My first word in my reply was “agree” We do all make mistakes sorry if I offended you in any way I was only looking for clarification on the o ring question I thought maybe it did not use one in that location. PS you might want to find some new mechanics if they make that many mistakes

"If only installers read directions the first time, or the second, or the third time" Maybe then they would not forget the o-rings don't you agree?

This is a funny thread for me b/c I did just this, and Charlie found it. I installed every inch of a new AC kit from Kuehl, following his excellent instructions to the T, or so I thought. Since I didn’t own the vacuum pump, gauges, or know-how 15 years ago, and since I live about an hour from his shop, I decided to drop off the car at his shop for the inaugural purge and charge while I went golfing nearby. I came back at the end of the day and he informed me that he had to track down what turned out to be a missing o-ring. Duh. He very matter-of-factly said “You did a nice job. Everyone makes a mistake now and then”.
So this is Deja vu for me.

So Ken are you saying you might have also installed the hoses on my 930

Or was it rather "You did a nice job, but..."

If it makes anyone feel better......I replaced every line on my 87 and did not have any leaks at all.

However, I did search for an hour for the non-existent fourth bolt on the compressor. It has four mounting holes, but Porsche only used three! I was close to ordering another one when I realized it only used three.

That's because the fourth attaching point is a stud with a washer and nut.

Nothing on mine. No place for a stud.

#11 only 3 required.

My bad. Was looking at stud labeled 2B with washer and nut 7 and 8 but they don't hold the compressor itself. Only the underside plate.
