Single or double stage paint on my SC

Hello All, I'm wondering if anyone knows if my 79' SC came from the factory with single or double stage paint? If I understand correctly the difference is that double stage has a clear coat on top, is that correct? Just trying to decide how to address the somewhat neglected paint on my black car. I believe it was washed regularly but I don't think it saw a whole lot of wax over it's life. Any thoughts on how to address it? I am and always have been a Zymol guy. Hd Cleanse and then they're wax but I may have to do more. Any help is appreciated.

Unless it was a very rare paint color, almost guarantee it was single stage.

Two stage is the modern stuff.

Rattle can is K1 (no hardner) and professional catalyzed paint is K2 single stage.

If you are painting the entire car, and not going for a concours perfect car, two stage paint is likely what you will get. It is hard to find many shops doing a single stage paint now. All the equipment is set up for two stage.

To tell what your current paint is, use a clean white rag and some white paint polish on small area. If it comes up with black color, it is single stage. If it just get shinier, it is two stage.

Maybe take it to a professional and they can measure paint thickness. If it is old and has been buffed a lot over the years, it might be very thin paint.

If it's still presentable looking paint, get a good mobile detail guy to come out and perhaps wet sand and buff the whole thing. The detail person, if good, will know how savable it is or isn't. Can take a couple days depending on how deep they go into the detail. I have had this done several times often with staggering results.

My black 88 is single stage enamel. A careful paint correction done right has it looking like new.

Single stage, but there's a good chance it's been repainted with base/clear (blech).

Guards Red/Indischrot color correction

If it's original single stage you can probably save 99% of it.

Are you sure this is correct? I also have a 79, in a metallic color, and I'm very interested in whether it's two-stage. I've heard varying opinions...

If metallic, then yes, probably base/clear. But you can check...

get some compound and rub a panel till it shines. If your cloth stays clean its 2k.If it turns body colour then its single stage.

My 80 was single stage. It had some respray done on the frunk and fenders to fix chips. My issue was that it took forever to wax as the 2 paints were just different enough that they would contrast slightly. Had it color sanded, hoping that would fix it and remove some bird ***** stains. Improved it quite a bit. Worth the effort and expense.
That said, it was bare metal resprayed in '14 in 2 stage BASF as my shop was not keen on single stage. Looks great and no bird stains.
