How stiff should my window be with reg and motor disconnected?
Hey Guys,
I have an 83' Targa and am in a pickle. Passenger window is insanely slow going upbeat going down the bottom half seems to pickup a little speed. I took out the the regulator to inspect which looks ok. Disconnected the motor. I have new felt on the track and kinda wiped the old grease and sprayed some new in the rear track. With everything disconnected it is still rather tough to pull the window up and down, again the window still pushes down a bit easier the second half of the way down. This is making me think either my window is at some weird angle or tracks are very very sticky. This was my dads car and sat for probably 15 years. I have been using it for about a year now with this dog slow window. My question is: How easy should the glass move up and down when disconnected from the motor/regulator? Im assuming my trouble lies in the track not the motor. |

Very easily. If the felts are new, that's one place to start. I'd remove all the door top trim pieces / seals and run it with the door open. This gives you a baseline speed of the motor lifting the glass. Then you can try adding more components back in to see where anything might be pinching or binding and slowing things down. When I replaced my rear seal, it was so much larger than the original shrunken one that it put enough pressure on the glass to actually separate it from the track the first time I put the window down with the door closed. The track kept going down and the glass stayed put. I had to dial in the angle of the glass with the various bolts in the door to lower that angular pressure on the rear seal.

I just took the glass out and discovered the plastic guide and guide rail has a ton of crud in the corners so have been thoroughly cleaning it out. I also noticed that the piece in which the spring sits on the assist was missing so Im sure that doesn't help either. Saw this on some there threads so it looks like I can rig a new one up. What are most people lubing it with? I was planning on using a type of grease for the regulator tracks and a white lithium with teflon spray for the plastic guide on on the rear rail.

I also did just noticed something similar but not as bad as yours happen to my driver side. Seems when it bottoms out it moves a little bit further causing the rails and regulator to bend a little. This also seems to have pushed the window up out of the metal window rail it sits in a bit. To get it to sit back down in that is it as simple as pushing down on it or do I need to take the window out to re-seat it properly?

Here's a whackadoodle idea...
I'll add to this that it is imperative that you look for "marks" or "evidence" of where the glass originally fit in the rubber and where the rubber originally fit in the lift channel and make note before proceeding. Can be as simple as a line between where things are clean on one side and dirty on the other. That might be your issue since you say the glass has come loose from the rubber and the channel. It may have moved fore or aft and that is why it is in a bind. Last edited by SCadaddle; 07-12-2020 at 04:24 PM.. |

Thanks Scadaddle,
Thats good to know! I will have a look tomorrow, however I did clean the glass and lift rail/guides today while I had it all out :0/ After cleaning everything and lubing it runs slightly faster but still pretty slow. |

Does these run on a relay or if not would that help. My 308 had a similar issue that was solved by installing relays.
Good luck Tony |
