AEM AFR wiring routing
Hi everyone,
Car is 1989 911 3.2. Quick question on routing the wire harness on my new AEM WBO2 system. People say they ran wires thru the grommit at the rear driver side footwell, but I don't see any available clearance? The main harness seems pretty tight, and not compressible. Advice appreciated. Also, is everyone just routing straight from the O2 senser along the wheel well and thru the grommit, or is there a reason to pass through the existing hole into the engine bay and then back out. Cant say exactly why, but Im nervous having the wiring right along the wheel exposed to environment. Saw one person installed retaining clips. Any other options? Finally, for the 911 I apparently need to splice in a couple of feet. Where are people doing that? Inside the cabin? Thx Mark ![]()

I just ran mine into the passenger compartment by way of the speedo cable hole, which goes into the shifter tunnel. From there I ran the cable out from the access cover of the tunnel in the back seat area, under the carpet along the shifter hump. Easy. I used the longer cable which they offer, so didn’t have to splice anything.

Thanks Lyle,
That does seem easier, and is where I want the gauge to end up anyway. Pretty bummed that there is a longer cable available. I called AEM tech support with that specific question before I bought based on a Pelican article and he said there was not, but 911 owners simply splice in a couple feet of wire. Not a huge deal, but one more thing to deal with. Where did you buy the longer cable from? Thanks again, Mark

Lyle, forgot about one more question.
Did you route the white wire all of the way back to the engine bay to feed to the original O2 connector, or did you figure out a different way to tap in? Did you still pull power and ground from main fuse block? Not that all of this isn’t reversible, but want to think it all thru before spending a day. Thanks, Mark

To be honest, I think I bought the long cable from Innovate (I used their AFR gauge first, but then it crapped out and I bought a AEM unit). If you check the connector profiles you should find they are compatible. Having said that, it may be possible to use the standard cable if you are efficient in your routing. In my case, I didn't need that much of the extra length (there is now a coil of slack wire under my passenger seat).
The cable from the WB sensor has all the wire / connections; you don't need to run anything separate. I then tapped power from the front fuse box; for ground, I just ran a short lead from the metal dash (where the radio has a ground).

I have an AEM installed in my 1982 SC. I ran the cable through the speedometer tunnel opening and had plenty of cable to reach my gauge location point - just used stock cable that came with kit.

Thanks guys. I have a Carrera 3.2 (as of 300 miles ago a 3.4) with Steve Wong chip and my understanding is it is more desirable to run in closed loop with feedback from the O2 sensor. AEM offers this option with the white wire, that can feed back to the computer via the original harness connector.

What they said, through the tunnel to the dash. Lost of places to get power and ground there. My cable was too short, spliced it at the rear tunnel opening. Mounted it into the cigarette lighter and wires through the glove box. Pretty neat install without any permanent mods or holes.

I bought mine with the long cable from Bisimoto... he was selling them here a few years back. I imagine he could help you find the longer cable.
Mine is routed as Lyle described, though i took a convoluted route up through the engine tin and around the front of the engine before going back down towards the tunnel. I still had a few extra feet of harness, which i coiled up and zip tied under the dash. To protect the wiring I used some split loom under the car and in the engine compartment, and then some braided sleeving in the tunnel and through the interior. (McMaster carr has a good selection of sleeving to choose from - i like the wrap around kind that can be installed over existing wiring without disconnecting anything.)
