Warm Up Regulator failure symptoms

I am having some problems with my 83' SC. In speaking with my mechanic he said that a faulty warm up regulator could be the culprit.

In your experience, what are some symptoms of a failing or faulty warm up regulator?

Most common symptom of an aged unit is cold start issues. Fuel pressure will not drop as low as it needs to causing a leaner than spec mixture. The engine put-put-puts to life. Problem only gets worse with time. There can also be chop throttle and idle issues along with warm running issues however that is less common. What issues are you having?

I would delete this thread or the other one, or others and only talk about your problem in one post.

This guy has one for the WUR, CDI, and FP. Not sure what was his problem/s with his car. That would be another topic.

I have an intermittent complete loss of power. I press on the accelerator and the car feels like it is going to die. I will downshift and I have power again. I might drive the car for a minute or two (or 10 seconds) and will seem fine and then it will happen again. Total loss of power. Along with this the car will backfire. This has happened twice now. After the first episode I replaced the fuel filter. I took it on a short drive just to run a quick errand after I replaced the fuel filter and the car was fine. About a week later I took it on a longer spirited drive (getting it up to temperature) and about 10 miles from my house the same thing happened only worse this time. Not only did I have complete loss of power multiple times trying to "nurse" the car home, but it backfired more than the first time and the car actually died twice......Sound familiar to anyone?

Sounds ignition related, not something the WUR would typically cause. I'd start with the CDI box then coil then green wire. Assumption is this only happens when the engine is warm yes?

My guess is green wire problem. Backfire suggests unburnt fuel in the exhaust which will happen on ignition failure. Green wire can short to outer sheath.

Yes, that is correct. It only seems to fail when it is up to temperature and I have been driving the car for 20-30 minutes

I had this happen a few years ago and it was the CDI failing.

Old mechanic's rule of thumb: start your hunt for a fault with ignition.

Impossible to diagnose without at the very least a video. First thing you need to do is check fuel pressures. Then share the results both cold and warm.

You would be better off taking it to a mechanic.

The relay under the seat, when bad, acts like a faulty WUR.
The fix is minimal and available at the local auto store.
Once replaced, if it works, you win. If not you didn’t bite the bullet for a replacement WUR that still doesn’t work.
Another thought is track your Llambda From the battery through the system

His mechanic suspected that the car could have a bad WUR, CDI, FP, etc. the way the car was behaving. And that’s the reason the OP is searching all the symptoms he could collect over the Internet. Instead of diagnosing and testing what is wrong with his car, he is collecting all known symptoms people had with their cars. What a way to solve his problem.
