Tires for a comfortable ride.

I'm currently running Bridgestone RE-11s on my '85 M491 and they are too rough riding for me. I no longer drive like I stole it. I take the car out for long pleasure drives at 70 mph max, usually cruising at 60+.

I can't take my teeth getting rattled out of my head any longer. Plus the wife is not happy.

I'm looking for a comfortable riding high performance all season. Tire rack has the calculator but I want to hear your opinions.

The RE-11s were my son's choice. They have about 1200 on them and are like brand new. But, in the cooler weather that I like to drive in they can be harsh.

TIA

Michelin Pilot Exalto , super smooth ride but summer only
I am on 3rd set I like them so much
Other 911 owners that ride with me always ask how did I get the supple ride, it's the tires!

Second on the Michelin Pilot Exaltos. I'm running 16 x 7 & 8s.

I really like the look and the ride.

Mike,
I have a collection of different rims and tires depending on my driving. 15" for AX, 16" with track tires and my comfy 16's with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+. They are an all season tire but handle like a summer high performance tire. Nice high thread wear rating and for Brooklyn, good in low temps.
I'm a transplanted NY boy (Sheepshead Bay) living in Ca, Don't have to deal with freezing temperatures here but love the Michelin's for their quiet ride, the way they absorb expansion strips and bumps and the long life. I believe Michelin is offering a $150 rebate on a set of 4.
Here's a link to TireRack to see if they make your preferred size: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+A%2FS+3%2B+%28W-+or+Y-Speed+Rated%29

M491 package typically shows 245/45/16

Do you have 9in rears ? If so your, selection maybe limited but Tire Rack shows these Pirelli P Zeros

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=P+Zero+Rosso&frontTire=055YR60ARN5&rearTire=445YR60ARN5&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Porsche&autoYear=1986&autoModel=911%20Turbo%20Look&autoModClar=

If your running 8 in rears Then Michelin A/S 3's 225/50/16 are a great choice. I ran them on my 930 with 8in rims and now my SC , also w 8in rims

another vote for the pilot sport a/s 3+ -- and this comes from a long-time all season tire HATER. Find the a/s3+ to be great for summer, wet/rainy and dry cold weather driving (ok for emergency icy/snowy driving only) -- i.e. for me, they provide much better performance than traditional all season tires and only really sacrifice on the icy/snowy end of the spectrum (my dedicated nokian WR-g3 winter tires are in another universe when driven on snowy/icy roads).

Note that the pilot exaltos also recommended above are NOT all season tires, so they're going to get hard when cold.

We cant keep up with the changes and while the A/S 4's appear to have to have a similar tread pattern, they are most certainly different from the A/S 3....WTH Michelin ? Looks like the 4's are a "more all season" tire than even the A/S 3 with the less aggressive tread pattern

I'd check with local tire shops...sometime they have better availability on discontinued tires

The Michelin A/S 3+ have been discontinued as mentioned replaced by the newer Michelin all season tire.

In general all season tires are going to give a little more comfortable ride than a summer tire due to a little additional tread depth. I've started running all seasons so I can safely drive in temps below 40 degrees.

This guy gives a great comparison between the A/S 3 vs A/S 4

For all round, use, I like the Continental ExtremeContact Sport for a summer tire and the ExtremeContact DWS 06 for an all season tire.

General max a/s works nicely. A little squishy sidewall. But good grip.

Thanks for all the great responses!

I never take the car out in the rain but comfort has become the factor.''

I use the ExtremeContact DWS 06

on my Audi Q5 and really like them. As of now it is between the AS4s and the Conti's. I like the look of the Generals very much as well.

Tony V........I was born and raised in the bay. E22 & Ave W. Baptized, married, kids got married, funerals etcetera there. Went to Shellbank and SBHS. Still in Brooklyn, but to the East in Bergen Beach.

Thanks again for all the wonderful input. If anyone is interested I will have a really fresh set of 205 & 225-16 RE-11's for sale. They have maybe 1200mi and have been in my heated, cooled and humidity controlled garage under a cover, they are like new.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I have Bridgestone RE-11 on the Miata and I agree, it is a performance tire..pretty harsh but good feedback on the turns.

Are the sizes 7” x 16”: 205/ 55 16 in front's and 8” x 16”. 225/50 16 in rear ?

Your car came with windshield wipers as a factory built in item. Driving in the rain does not hurt a car. Dirt does wash off.

It's not that I do not want to drive in the rain, it's just that I do not get to drive as much at all.

I am selective as to when I go for a drive mainly due to my health.

I hear in one ear, can't see at night, horrible back w/ chronic pain not to mention the Crohn's Disease. I just don't have the same enthusiasm as before.

Oh, and 3 grandkids that we take care of and make sure to see every weekend. Priorities

But, I will pick a nice day to enjoy myself if convenient.

John,
Yes, the tires are 7” x 16”: 205/ 55 16 in front's and 8” x 16”. 225/50 16 in rear

Another satisfied Michelin Pilot Exalto user. Running them with 16x7&8 Fuchs on our 84 M491. Actually fairly quiet and comfortable. Not surprisingly they are a bit more fun to drive on than the very grippy 18” Michelin 4S’s on her “vanity” wheels...
