Dual dash stopwatch tiimers...any info for DIY?

I noticed that on some of the earlier cars they have a very cool dual stop watch setup in-place of the radio. Has anyone done a DIY setup, or "how to" with pics? any info? why two stopwatches? Thanks in advance!

In your top photo, only the watch on the left is a stopwatch, used for timing. The other is strictly a clock, used to indicate the precise time of day. The Heuers are the most popular but are very expensive these days.

As for instructions, you basically just screw the backing plate to the dash and attach the watches...

I suppose to make the installation authentic, you should also have a Curta "pepper mill" calculator. And maybe an aluminum clipboard, a couple of Hella stalk lights, and a cranky but lovable navigator. And one of those "tick-tock", cube-shaped, battery-powered radio receivers that allowed you to set the clock to the proper time in a freezing parking lot at o'dark-thirty in the morning.

If the vintage rally timers appeal to you but don't want to spend a fortune these folks from Germany can set you up. vh_classics - klassisches Rallye Zubehör - Retro Trip, VH Trip, Halda
A pair of knockoff mechanicals might be less than a few hundred. This stuff really isn't used anymore but for fun rally's and they look so neat. Sometimes a triple clock is used (one could be used as a scheduled time.)

Just for basic talk, the dual clocks are dependent of what type of timing is used during a rally. There are regularity timing, due time or perhaps flying checks, etc., where the competitor doesn't have to to stop. Mutiple stages and the prior timer is recorded then reset, and so forth. If one has a navigator and 'dialed' in, is reading some sort of short hand notes, they could use timers to measure intermediate distances, etc. to assist the driver anticipating landmarks, references or other. There are many different ways to use them.

First, thanks all for the insight and help. I am interested in the setup as it is very neat and a tasteful accessory, in my opinion, than having a head unit. I might consider putting a stereo head unit in the glove box at a latter time, but for now I just want to focus on the driving experience and pretend I'm racing

Thanks again, and any more info is always appreciated.

How handy are you?

These are relatively cheap "PARNIS" watches available on Ebay.

I've been thinking about this for a while >>>
With a little machining you could end up with a very acceptable stop watch/clock for your dash.

(They are the right size, 50mm or nearly 2 inches)

Check this link at the Early S.
I did a set of these for my car and put them on the glove box.

At the end of the link, you'll see a US supplier of some rally clocks.

that setup is sold on eBay from a germany supplier - it has chrome look watches instraed of black, but is very well made

- i bought one about 6 months ago

for my 914-6 - I installed mine onto a "L" shape aluminum plate that slides into the ashtray slot - now I have gotten a extra tray, so i will make a permanent removable interchangable unit

Yes they are. You do not want to know what we paid for Mel Shapiros clocks when we were putting together his '68 Monte Carlo Rally replica a few years back. We sourced original vintage clocks that had been restored out of Europe. For what was spent on them, I could pick up a decent run around town 2.7l 911...

You can spend a fortune on a period correct set up. However, if you just want the look (not function) you can find non-working watches and make your own mounting plate and fasten with regular hardware like in this picture without killing your budget.

Diy

Bought mine a few years ago. Went to Home Depot and got a scrap metal plate for free and bought nipple bolt covers and plasti-dip in grey. Stuck an industrial velcro at the back and put it on the glove box.

Heuer Mounting

I started this thread a while back, I am a total Heuer addict but as the post says, no way I am drilling anything on my dash.

I am still crafting another version to secure the bottom under the dash pad to eliminate the 'bounce'.

I love my Heuers but I'm not drilling my dash (lots of pics)

Hope it helps,

Paul
