Hanging engine without yoke on HF stand

How many of you don’t bother with the yoke when hanging your engine from the HF stand?
I don’t need to split my case. So I can use all four studs. Got longer 8.8 bolts for the three short ones. Wouldn’t this be better than just the two studs the yoke uses?

I did it without the yoke, it was fine, but definitely didn’t balance the rotation very well. So it could be a bear to rotate when fully built.

Be careful about damaging the metal outside of the stud where the trans bell housing mates

HF stand works great, just mod the tubes by grinding back a cutout for the case ledge.

If I need to split the case I just throw it up on the bench and take off the HF spider. You can also use the HF stand spider to build the half case on the stand like the expensive mount no problem.

Yikes, don't hang anything with just two studs, it will bend the square tube, break the studs or the case, or all three.

I bought a new yoke for about $100 on Samba. It's not as nice as the machined factory tooling but it works fine for weekend warriors.

I’m trying to get that one. I think they are mode to order which requires patience which I have none. But now that I’m hooking this up. I might just wait for the yoke.

You must be referring to my pic. I wasn’t done with the stand. I explained using all four mounting locations.

I cant get this to lineup anyhow. I have the 1 ton stand. Comes with two small and two long arms. The long arms are too long.

Just my 2 cents: I went for the Porsche specific one. About $199 several years ago.

It has the correct cutouts to mount the side with the oil cooler.

It is very solid, and will not deflect when a fully built engine is rotated.

That last part is non-trivial. That is a wildly expensive case. And the two studs carry all the load via tension. A flexible mount is going to allow the studs to be bent. Bending is bad as the studs can rip out of the housing.

Going for the Porsche specific design is a relatively expensive choice. But cheap compared to the engine value. I went with piece of mind. The right tool for the job.

Buy the Porsche yoke and then after you are finished with it, sell it here on Pelican for $100 less than you paid.

Or try to borrow one from a local Pelicanite. Pretty good bunch of people here who are willing to help others.
Might cost you a couple of drives to fetch and return it and a case of beer. Still cheaper than the alternatives.

You don't need the large stand, return it and get the small with the equal length arms. Or drill your longer arms, you already have the pattern.

The larger stand allows me to slide my large HF table jack right up to the mount in between her legs. I need to just wait for the yoke.

In the late 1990's I used a harbor freight engine stand by modifying the mounting bracket. It worked just fine but I could not rotate the engine 360 degrees with the exhaust system installed.

I used the large stand and an atv jack to do the transfer. Works great.

The best part of the OEM one is the groves that match up to the engine.
Much less stress on the bolts.

In a minimal garage workspace, I once assembled a long block on a HD lazy susan on my workbench. That setup enabled 360 deg. access. Transferred to a dolly platform to attach gearbox and to install. The intake (carbs) and exhaust systems were then installed.
