Like driving at 75 MPH in heavy rain and saying the rain caused the hydroplaning. Nope, just driving too fast for conditions.

It is a shame he crashed, and I hope he makes a full recovery. The car can be replaced.

that rain analogy isn't the case here. the conditions were clear and the turn just before the bridge was slightly wet due to overnight condensation. we learned from CHP that they're very familiar with this spot. driver is stable and doing ok. i agree it's a shame and cars can be replaced.

Given the differences between drivers and cars, the latter's not going to work.

I've been told that the drivers at an end of a group end up going faster, although it's never been fully explained nor understood by myself.

I've been at the front, middle and end of a pack and I just go the speed I want to.

Excellent observation.

I don't think it matters if one hits something head on or is rear ended, a roll bar in a street car is a head banger from what I've read.

I let the 911's rest this time of year... I don't trust the safety of a 40-50 year old car. The driver of this wreck is lucky that big truck didn't completely big foot it.

True about Black-Ice, and don't forget our cars are fairly short wheelbase and will spin when prompted to do so.

Wrong time of year for summer tires, seen it may times in this forum, I'm just trying to get the word out and not pointing fingers. Not everyone grew up in freeze/thaw conditions like I did.

Requiem for a Targa

I decide, since it's cold but sunny, to take the Targa back to work....................

......... The combination of cold tires, cold road and my correction got me sideways, then on my side, then two impacts with the dirt hill on the opposite shoulder and then back upright.
I think the below is a real possibility.

bad day

My thoughts are for the driver. The best for you on a bad day.Shart happens.Ciao Fred

Went out for a drive, towards that road. Was moving up the hill when a 996/GT3 came up from behind, we boogied for awhile, then pulled over at a turnout. We started chatting, turns out he was on a drive with the driver the day it happened. He said they were well ahead and almost at the destination. Even he didn't know what the actual cause was.

Best wishes for a full recovery.

Front bumper of the 1500 has two battering rams, literally, behind it which probably compressed the entire driver side a few feet in.

He's lucky the closing speed wasn't much faster.

Sounds like he'll make a recovery.

Being thrown around upon impact, a person’s head can certainly contact the roll bar.

I'm surprised nobody has brought up the old spare tire crash structure myth.

True. I've heard that myth many times in the past. Is there any authoritative source that dispels that myth?

pmax 12-09-2020 02:36 PM

Not going to matter meeting a 2 tonne object.

I found it odd in the picture that there is no fuel on the ground. I would have thought the tank would have at least cracked.

I've heard that story that it is a 'planned' part of the crunch zone but...it is on the gas tank making it a part of the 'crunch zone' and that would not be very bright would it.

The gas tank and spare tire would have at least partly tucked under the front of this truck given the height difference between the two vehicles. One reason trucks and SUVs scare the crap out of me (my dd is a smaller car).

I'm glad to finally hear someone call it a myth, first time in fact.

An interesting topic.

It's the being rear ended that worries me.

More info here:

They make several versions of the Knight Rider, mine has red running/parking lights, and also flashes 4-times and then goes bright solid red when the brake is depressed (also does this last part in the day time).

This was exactly my guess as well
