Reminder how unsafe the open road can be!

This accident occurred yesterday morning on Pescadero Road. I’ve driven this stretch of road many times on drives out to the coast. Praying that the driver will be ok.

Looks like the Porsche did pretty well at protecting the passenger compartment, but obviously no airbags, etc.. Just have to pray the driver will be OK.

You can see the bridge where this happened on Satellite view. By where the vehicles came to rest it appears the 911 was headed west and crossed over center.

from the damage to the rear and the " stuff" on the rear tires, looks like they may have lost control and the truck unfortunately caught the last of what happened. Hope everyone is OK. Be careful everyone

Somebody on the local Facebook group commented that it could be black ice... 36 degrees overnight in that area.

They only made it 50' onto the bridge and the bridge is straight. There is no way 36° and 50' of straight bridge could get him completely over the center line.

He had to have come out of the last corner and crossed the center line in a big way. Here is the view looking east to the corner the Porsche just came out of.

The bridge is about 500' west on Pescadero Creek Rd from the intersection with Dearborn Park Rd.

36 listed by NWS could easily be 32 on that bridge. I like Quicksilver’s version, maybe into some ice on the bridge and loses it trying to get back in his own lane when he sees the suv approaching.

Yeah, that's what it looks like.

Car lost control swiped the passenger side on the bridge, bounced off and crossed over.

The truck swerved to the right trying to avoid the head-on but ran out of room.

Windshield is gone.
Driver sustained massive head injuries.
I am guessing he was ejected from the car.

Hope the driver make a full recovery.

The windshield is definately gone, put would probably happen whether the driver hit it or not. That right front corner to quite a high impact forced. You can see how far back the door hing post was pushed if you look at the A-pillar angle relative to the door window frame.

Almost look like it's got a roll bar with a diagonal brace installed, though it could be a reflection. If he was belted in and his head whipped back an hit that bar, it would explain massive head injury. Cages are great in a racing setting where you're wearing a helmet, but in a street car it definately increases the risk of head injury.

Here's the latest from his family (posted on Facebook)

"On Saturday, December 5th 2020, my dad started his Saturday the best way he knew how. He went out with his buddies to take a drive in their Porches. With only a couple minutes out from his final destination, my dad hit a slick spot on the road and went head on into oncoming traffic. His car was completely totaled and he was left with serious injuries. He was then airlifted to Stanford Hospital and his condition continues to change everyday."

RGrupper, super nice guy and needs your prayers.

Wheels are different. Mirrors are the same though.

Lower profile summer tires below 50 degrees are rubbish.

Even kids know to put a hockey puck in the freezer so they can play hockey in the streets in the summer.

The mediocrity of All-Season tires keeps me safe year round, because they force you to drive slower.

EDIT:

Yep, same car different wheels.

It only takes one accident which you avoid to pay for the cost of having snow tires. Over here in Germany... when the temps are under 7'C or less... you are required to have snow tires (M+S & the snow flake symbol). Other wise you can be charged as fault bc you couldn't avoid teh accident bc you had AS or summers on.

You can actually damage the compound permanently by running them in temps that are too low.

For summer tires, it is not advised to use them below 50 degrees. Some of the more temperamental (sticky) tires will be damaged permanently (I would say in the freezing/near freezing area). They will never perform the same after this happens.

Be careful!

When faced with near- and below-freezing temperatures, drivers should leave their summer performance tire-equipped vehicle at home and drive a vehicle equipped with all-season or winter tires.
Using summer tires in winter
https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/auto-care/safe-driving/using-summer-tires-in-winter
Quote:
Also known as "max performance summer" tires or, more accurately, "three-season" tires, they come standard on every Porsche (except the Cayenne), all Corvettes, the Viper, all Ferraris and more.

The reason: Summer tires offer more grip on both wet and dry roads than all-season tires, much less winter (aka "snow") tires. The only exception: when the thermometer drops below freezing or snow covers the pavement...................

Here's the bottom line: If you have a high-performance car on summer tires, don't drive it in the snow or when it's much below freezing. Don't count on ultra-high-performance all-season tires to provide anything more than limited mobility in snow, but you can be assured of less wet and dry grip. And a BMW 335 on first-class snow tires is a blast on a snow-covered track.
