what if? a switcheroo scenario .......

let's say you send your speedo in - an original working 1986 300 kph euro speedo. it requires the infamous trip meter repair. proper markings on the back etc ...... '86 etc etc .....
350 dollars later you receive the repaired unit. the case is now from a 1982 SC
no mention made of the swap out.
my car, fwiw, is an '83 SC.
the speedo was initially purchased at fairly large expense - and, as explained - is not going into a 930, ie - date codes not a big deal,
i suppose i do have a mini form of bastardized speedo at this point.

should i lose any sleep over this? bother making a fuss?

The "other guy" with the 82SC might have been going for a concourse reproduced speedo for an all original SC.

I"d bring it up.

Also interested in which shop performed the "switcheroo" without telling you...

I'd mention it, as Mark says t could be an issue for the "other" guy, but regardless I would think it should be mentioned so as such details big or small do matter in my opinion. I'd hate to think that the business regards it as "nothing" because to some it would make a difference in #'s matching, all original cars

fwiw I ALWAYS will place my name taped on a unit being sent for repair ... Tach, WUR ... whatever. And I'll expect the same unit back.

100% denial. "we would never do that."
that was the response.
i know otherwise - the speedo was the original one, out of my friend's '86 930. i recall checking the date/code.
i did not take a picture - my loss/mistake.
honest mistake? not on my end, that's for certain.
not gonna lose any sleep over it.
me sorta disappointed, nevertheless.

wasn't outta California, fwiw ...... : )

Did they reset the odometer?
If you had sent one in with an operating odometer and you got it back with the wrong numbers, you at that point have to disclose at any future sale that true mileage is unknown.
Had it been your original and you got it back, it would have been an accurate to say "actual mileage"
Kind of cheesy on their part

I sent my 80 SC tach in to have the face redone with voltmeter. Before it was returned, shop called to say that tach belonged to earlier model(early 70's). Told him that wasn't mine but he insisted it was and sent it to me. After receiving it, I called and had a heated discussion with them. Returned the tach and finally received a correct tach in a couple of weeks. No doubt it wasn't the original.

I am pretty sure I had something similar happen to me with a distributor I sent to be rehabbed and recurved by a well-known fellow. The distributor I received back was not the one I sent - I had photos I took of the one I sent to compare and while the PN did match, the scratches and markings did not. I was assured that the unit that was returned to me was the same one I sent in but I don't think it was... alas... not much I could do. Also in my case, the car, motor, pretty much everything is non-original so in the end it didn't really matter to me so I tried not to waste too much energy on it. It bummed me out though...

Happened to me

Ended up in court over my 930 and won the case

I had it pretty well detailed and the DMV BAR referee was solid

Guy apparently had done it before and DVM doesnt mess around with these criminals
