Pulley marks....help
I hate asking a question if I can read it on the forum, but I have spent a couple of hours and can’t figure this one out. I’m putting a new MFI belt on and want to set it correctly. I set the notch on the pump pulley with the notch on the pump body. I have the motor set to TDC for #1. The pulley has multiple notches, but absolutely no letters. I know I have to rotate the pulley 360* to get to TDC for #4 and then set it to the FE mark. That’s the one I’m not sure of. I attached a drawing of the notches on the pulley. It is a 1971 911E 2.2. Thanks for any help.

#4 clyinder TDC and then turn the pulley clockwise to the FE mark. Your drawing is weird.

The drawing is exactly how the notches are on the pulley

Mark,
Look at the pulley again - are you getting left and right mixed up because you are looking down at the pulley from above? Can you take a picture of it? I've seen where the wrong pulleys have been installed by previous owners - or the marks are so light you can almost not see them anymore.

Rex, Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’ll try and get a good picture this morning. I’ve owned the car for the last 45+ years. The motor has been out only once to do the transmission about 25 years ago. It looks like the mechanic had the pulley off to put some orange sealer around the rear bearing behind the pulley. Is it possible he put it on backwards or do they just go on one way. Pardon my ignorance, but I’ve never had to pull one off. Mark

Rotate
I'm thinking that you may not have your engine set at #1 TDC, but at the 6,2 mark.....If I rotate your pulley drawing counter-clockwise 120 degrees...it makes more sense.

Mark,
That is the back side of the rotor. That is a rev limiting rotor, and it is the other side that makes the contact.

Al, you were right. I cleaned the heck out of the pulley with steel wool and brake cleaner. I found the Z1 and the FE marks. Thanks everyone for all the help.
Now I have a secondary question: I attached a photo of the rotor when the Z1 notch is at TDC #1. The rotor doesn’t align with the more prominent notch. There is a very small notch that it aligns with, but I’m not sure if that is just a scratch or not. The black mark is Z1 and the red is FE. Not sure where to go from here? Thanks, Mark ![]() ![]()

Mark, as stated above.....your rotor is not pointed to the TDC mark on the distributor.....this is likely consistent with the pulley not being aligned with TDC also...
![]() rotate the crank pulley clockwise until the rotor contact points to the TDC groove in the distributor and then check your crank pulley marks again. Ther Z1 and FE marks are on the pulley face, so you may need a mirror to see them. regards, al

ok Mark are posts are passing each other in the ether......if your crank pulley is at TDC now....but your rotor now looks to be pointed to #4.(Z1 is TDC for 1&4)....rotate the crank pulley around another 360, until the pulley TDC is aligned with the mark again and then check your rotor again.......look at the pic above to identify the rotor contact.
regards, al

Al, when the rotor is at TDC the Z1 mark is at 4 o’clock. I’m guessing it was put on wrong years ago? I’ll remove it and reset it. Are they pressed on or will it come off after I remove the nut?

Mark,
Please look at the pix i posted above of the rotor, showing the correct rotor contact.....what you have pointing at the TDC distributor mark is not the contact. Note: The crank pulley has a pin in it so that it can only be installed one way. It is unlikely it is the problem.
