G50 in SWB

has anyone put a G50 into a SWB 911 (i tired a search but really didn't get an answer) my car is a '66 and has long since lost all of it's originality so i am just doing my own thing i will be using coil over front and rear so modifying the car is no big deal or is modifying the torsion bar tube a "big deal" not going to have a back seat any ways

I wouldn't just because of the weight penalty.

But if you press on there are 2 ways.

1. Shorten the G50. This requires machining the mainshaft, bell housing and then attaching a 915 style mount.

2. Weld a different torsion tube or modify the torsion tube. like this.
Project **G50**

Then you need matching axles that will not fit in SWB trailing arms. Oh, don't forget the hydraulic clutch setup, including pedal cluster and such.

good luck.

Anything can be done, but it would be insane expensive for the benefit of the G50 over a 915.

You can get a 915 totally rebuilt and built to better than new for a lot less money. And the 915 is not some horrible transmission.

So the answer is sure you can, but why? It is your car and your money, do to it whatever you want. You can put a $40,000 paint job on it if you want, but again why?

thanks i just want to be sure shortening the G50 means not cutting the torsion tube shortening is $600 on top of rebuild so really not bad plus the G50 has a more favorable gear spacing to rebuild and re-gear a 915 is $$$$ i was quoted $12000-15000 i can get all of the things needed pedals clutch slave shifter etc for way less and the weights of a 915 and a G50 are close enough that i don't see a weight penalty plus like i said i have coil overs there are a few places that make half shafts to order so G50 to old school hub even the 915 would need new axles the link looks like he kept the G50 "long" is that why he cut the torsion bar tube?

almost 30 extra pounds out the back and the potential to have to move the entire drivetrain back further still in an SWB car. to each their own.

what engine, and HP, do you intend to run that necessitates a G50? that is an enormous amount of work and $$...

thirty pounds over or in front of the rear wheels not just hanging out back would actually put more weight on front wheels even if it is a tiny amount the real issue is fitment i have seen posts from people who have done it 15 plus years ago and hopefully they will answer my inquiries plus just run a composite bumper engine cover swap the bulky cis to itb or carbs and 30 lbs ain't nothing

I wouldn't even consider a G50 for only 250 hp. Total waste of money.

You will need to cut up your car to install a G50, not just the torsion tube replacement.

Porsche didn’t even bring out the 915 until the ST hit 250hp. Spend your money elsewhere than a g50 swap. Personally I wouldn’t even put in a 915 at that power.
