M&k Muffler Advice
Hi Guys:
This is my first post on this board and would like some advice. I have a 1970 911T widebody conversion, with a weber carbed 2.2L engine. My current exhaust consists of RS headers going into a single inlet "can" with a single outlet. I was thinking of going with the M&K 2in/2out setup. I have already heard the sound bites on youtube and the exhaust does sound good. However, I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this exhaust on a 2.2 engine? Also can anyone tell me if it will increase/decrease my H.P.?? Thanks: Fantor |

I had a M&K gen 5 or 6 (latest version) 2 in 2 out sport muffler on my '71 911T 2.2. I drove the car for a total of 1 hour, returned home and immediately removed the muffler. The drone was at a level where I had a pounding headache and ringing ears after my drive. Any driving where the engine was below 3K RPM, the drone was unbearable, above that it got better but still loud. For a race car the 2 in 2 out may be an option or if you don't really care about a car that will get lots of attention due to the noise level. My wife occasionally drives the 911 and there was no way she would drive the car with this muffler.
Muffler sound is a very subjective thing and you are going to get lots of opinions. The M&K is a wonderfully built muffler and very light, just too loud for my taste. I'm going to try a Dansk sport 2 in 1 out and a Dansk 2 in 2 out pee shooter. Hopefully one of these mufflers will hit the "sweet spot" Last edited by m1franck; 01-31-2011 at 10:06 AM.. |

I love my Dansk 2-in-1-out. It's on a 3.2 though so my exhaust video might not be helpful. The sound while driving is awesome. Did it add HP? Eh- hard to say:

I had an M&K 2 in, 2 out and the drone was unbearable. It takes a lot of engineering to make a muffler that works right with a MFI car and I feel that the one I bought just did not cut it.. Looks=9, Sound/Noise=2, Performance=4.
I had to edit my post as I was making a blanket statetment before and needed to wake up some.

You can cap off one side for street driving and still have the dual out look. Much less expensive than buying a new 2in/1out muffler.

Yes, Ben at M&K has a cap that fits inside the outlet. You can spray it flat black and put it inside back by the muffler body and rivet or screw it in to retain the dual outlet looks and still be removable if you want.

FWIW, I bought an M&K from Ben a couple years ago now. 2in 2out. When I installed it, my impression was not great. Not so much the fact that it was loud, but the resonance was painful. And I wanted to remove it immediately. But decided I made the investment so I ran it for a few more weeks. And to my surprise it got better. The drone was gone and in fact it actually developed a very unique and nice pitch. I will buy again when the opportunity comes up. BTW, my motor is a 2.5 short stroke with PMO's.

I have a bone stock 87 3.2 and am toying with the idea of a M&K pre-muffler and a one in one out. I wouldn't mind a bit more sound but not obnoxious. I am worried about drone, but is this an issue with one out?

chgoburbs, I ran a Fabspeed pre-muffler and an M&K 1in/1out for well over a year before I sold my 88'. Absolutely loved the sound. I had no droning at all.

I have two M&K mufflers both are 2 in 2 out variety. One is on my SC with SSI's and the other on my 914 GT clone with a 3.0 , headers and 2 in 2 out. My thoughts are for daily use the passenger side being capped off is perfect. I find the drone is gone and they both are pretty tame. At the track or just when I want to piss off the neighbors
I remove the cap and they sound wonderful. I really like the ability to add or remove the cap as my mood desires. Ben is a great guy to deal with, he's a Porsche guy and his mufflers are a work of art. But sound quality is very subjective so to each his own.

That has been my experience too, both with an M&K 2 in 2 out and a Flowmaster race muffler on my old 928. The sound changed dramatically after a coating of carbon had built up on the inside.

You might want to try the 2 in 1 out if the noise is objectionable to you. it sounds great to me!

I have been thinking about an electric valve on the passenger side pipe that I can control from the cabin. Not that taking the plug in and out is hard, but it would be nice to be able to get out of the neighborhood quietly, then open up the valve when I'm on the open road to hear the roar.

I have a GT3 Gen 6 on my 3.0 Euro. Its a great muffler! Sound is right for me and no drone... Then again I came from the M&K Shorties so any real muffler at all would have sounded quiet compared to those. But, I have noticed zero drone in my GT3.

Thanks for the input guy's. So I guess my next question is. Witch 2/2 muffler will fit my car. I wanted to buy the M&K Exhaust Stainless Steel Muffler - 2 in 2 out - Tips Polished, 911 (1974-89), 914-6 (MK-MNEB-22-T). The one with the 2 angled outs going out the sides of the rear bumper, NOT the straight out one. However, my Porsche mechanic says it won’t fit because the connection flanges are spaced differently on my 1970 911T then that on the 74-89 models. Is this true?? If so, does M&K make one that will fit my year with the angled outs??
Thanks Again: Fantor |

I was a tester for the second to last generation M&K and the drone is gone on my generation. I was dead set on not getting one due to that but I worked with Ben and he added an extra removable baffle that makes a huge difference.
I can't say enough nice things about Ben and M&K, his dedication to what his customers want is just out of this world. If there is something you don't like sound included I'm positive he will make it right for you.
