Starter wire connections........need help.

The picture below was taken a few years ago using a new engine wire harness made by Timmy2 (Dennis P.) and the motor is long gone now. Here is my predicament at the moment and would need all the help I could get.



The picture below is the motor I am now working. Look very closely at the yellow wire with stripe. It started to smoke and melt. I have to abort the start-up until I identify and locate the culprit/s for this serious problem and a major set back. The owner of the motor wants it ASAP. I have to make the motor to start/run and deliver the motor to its owner.



Could someone tell me if the wire connections in the second picture is correct? This is an 83 SC motor. What could have caused the over heating of the wire (yellow with stripe). Thanks.

Yellow wire with stripe is supposed to go to terminal 16 on starter. Fat yellow wire to 50.
The striped wire runs directly to the CSV, then to the TTS as a plain yellow wire.

Hard to say why it failed, did it rub against the terminal directly behind it? (Always hot )
Or somewhere else?

as Dennis said ,it sure really looks like that ,it touchet the hot nut..could have had a little break in the wire insulation

How do you identify terminal #16 from terminal #50 or vise versa? For the SC starters, I just connect them as I remembered them or use old pictures for references. For example if you have a new STARTER that has a slightly different configuration, how could do you safely identify which is which?

With regards to the burned yellow wire with stripe, I noticed the appearance of smoke only when I turned the ignition switch to START position. I could be wrong, but this was connected like this before as far as could recall. Are the two (2) yellow wires installed at the wrong terminals?

If they were correctly installed, what could have caused this problem? BTW, do you have a set of engine wire harness for a ‘78~’79 SC in stock? I need one for another project. PM sent. Thanks.

Using an ohmmeter, Terminal 50 will show a low resistance to ground (case of starter) through the coil.
16 should have infinite resistance to the case.
16 only connects (gets voltage) as the solenoid picks up and closes the internal switch when ignition is in start position.

look at the condition of that starter that could be a problem.

Photo looks like the thin wire might have shorted to the cleaner metal piece where it is green/blue from the fat positive post on the starter behind it.
Easy for the high current DC from the post to jump through 38 year old insulation to a convenient ground if touching both during cranking.
