New rennline ultimate hood strut

So installed subject struts and now my hood will not close completely. Not sure yet if the new struts are the reason, but seems suspicious. Anyone else tried these?

Sigh, i plan to install my old struts to see if my hood will close.
Went back to the old struts and hood closed all the way. Maybe I installed the new ones incorrectly or I was too nervous of letting go as there is no resistance with the rennline strut. Anyway glad my hood is okay.

Mike -- I have standard hydraulic hood struts, but always gently pull my hood down -- latch stops it around an inch or so above closing and final step is pushing on the hood ornament to engage the latch -- Is this what you ran into with the rennlines? Have you traditionally let yours close on its own (e.g. let it drop from a foot or so up)? May be a technique issue?

The trunk lid is quite heavy without any hood shocks, but manageable even with borderline units that can't support and hold.

I would think the Rennline units would be designed to have enough clearance to allow full closure. Don't force anything.

Those used to be manufactured by Pelican here. I have 3 or 4 of them. I've only ever used them on my rear deck lid. Whatever you do, don't force it.

Are these adjustable somehow?

I agree with Darrin. Kind of a two step process.

Well the latch caught and left my hood about an inch or so open. Pushing on the hood firmly did not allow things to engage. The latch was not going down. I also noticed some paint stress up around the pass side rear hood corner. But might be unrelated. Car is in paint prep. At least all is well with the standard gas struts. Though not as slick as the rennline carbon fiber look.

Any chance they're installed upside down and binding?

I would return them. This should be a quick and cheap project.

I did the regular Stabilus/OEM style, but the 'heavy duty' ones 7 years ago and still just fine with a little more strength, even in cold weather. A little better than the regular version. Does the job just fine.

Do you have the old ones ? Can you physically compare the two? Is it possible that you have recieved the wrong struts for your application?

I would call the vendor.

The best renowned is to never push on the hood badge. It was not designed for that much force. Spread your fingers and use both hands and gently and evenly push on the hood itself. The crest can snap off a peg an have to be replaced if pushed on too hard.

Resurrecting this old thread.
A fellow Pelican suggested installing only one Rennline unit keeping the regular gas shock on the other side. I did so and my hood went out off alignment against the fenders and lowered the height of the hood at the back where it meets the cowling and fender. Guess old well worn hinges will do that.
So I then installed the one on the other side which brought the hood to better alignment save for height in both rear corners.
To add embarrassment in a public parking lot, one side would unlatch but not the other. After what seemed like half an hour, I pulled the upper pin on the more offending driver’s side strut and it retracted no problem. It has a mind of its own when testing it in my hands so will attempt to return both. I’m going back to the gas shocks. These Rennline units make for a very, very heavy frunk hood! My wife would no be able to lift it. More importantly, an unaccustomed person could try to force the hood down without first raising it to unlock the strut resulting in a bowed/bent hood.

Cheers,
Johan

Love mine. They allow you to drop the hood without having to push it down to click it closed.

I would love mine too if they worked at the same time.
Impressive frunk-no electrical wires. So, where did you hide them?
Is that a brake balancing valve (silver) on the side of your brake master cylinder?
Cheers,
Johan

Hey Johan,

It is a brake biased unit. Wilwood I think. NZ compliance laws forced me to install it. Don't think it is needed but they thought the car had too much front bias. Bill Verburg and others said it was BS which I'm sure they are correct.

No HVAC system as the car is 95% track. Still love making it look tidy though. Filled a ton of holes up front, still some more to do but I love the clean look. Most holes just filled with a fiberglass resin and then sand sand sand.
